She had just eaten dinner. The ceiling above her reflected the first stars beginning to appear in the dark blue night sky. All around her was noise and chatter, the clinking of cutlery and dishes against one another as the Hogwarts students enjoyed their meal. Once again it struck Liberty how admirable house elves were. When she was younger, she used to feel sorry for the creatures until she realised that they loved what they did, so it made no sense feeling sorry for them. Every day they provided tasty meals for the students, even though it was no feast unless there was a special occasion it was still wonderful.
Glancing at her watch she saw there was still an hour before curfew. She could go up to the common room and see if her friends were there, and talk to them, or she could explore the halls a bit. Whenever she had time before curfew Liberty loved to just wander around the halls aimlessly. It was one of her many favorite pastimes. No matter how much she explored Hogwarts, how many hours she spend walking about she always discovered something new. Always. She loved that about this castle.. it gave her a sense of adventure, just a small tiny taste of it. Something that she has longed for for a while now.
Deciding on the latter, she exited the hall and headed for the moving staircases. She always imagined in her mind that she was 'meant' to go on whatever area the staircases led her too. Smiling to herself she got on one, just as it began to move, and lead her to another one and so on. Eventually she found herself up on the seventh floor. Dismounting from the staircase, she walked around with no particular destination in mind, passing a tapestry, various paintings, doors and long stretches of wall. Oh how she would love to discover another of Hogwart's many secrets.
She wanted to someday know the many passageways and rooms of Hogwarts, but for this evening just finding one more would do. She had read in a few books that seventh floor had a secret room, and she hoped to see it one day. (Didn't she already pass that tapestry? Was she walking in circles?) Almost as if sensing it's appearance, she looked up and saw a door in front of her along the stretch of wall, that hadn't previously been there. Awesome! A feeling of excitement sparked in the pit of her stomach, as she wondered what was behind the door. The books mentioned a room, but there was no detailed record of a description of the room or anything like that, almost as if the books themselves were unable to reveal the information.
With anticipation, and feeling a bit ridiculous for how worked up she was getting over something so minor, she turned the door handle. It's not as if it was that big a deal.. just when you spend your life hiding behind walls like she did, things like this tended to be more interesting that it was for the average person. Entering the room, her eyes took in the scene before her. The room had a sophisticated, elegant look to it. There was a mixture of colours in the design, some from each house, but on each walls was a banner displaying her house bride; a blue banner with a bronze eagle on it. The room wasn't huge, nor small. It was average sized, and had a couch and some bookshelves. There was also a small desk with some writing paper, quills and ink.
Thoughtfully, she stepped in, allowing the door to close behind her. It seemed like.. the perfect room for her. A place she would be able to spend hours in comfortably. She already had a few pretty good ideas what the room was probably about, upon seeing it now, and wandered over to the bookshelf. She skimmed the titles, passing her hands over a few of them, before pulling out one on 'dark arts'. She usually avoided those kind of books, but the room must have provided it for her for a reason right? Holding it carefully, she walked over to the couch, falling into it and automatically curling up with her book.

[shadow=red,left,300]Riley Saige[/shadow]Riley, being the undeniable free spirit she was, found herself roaming the halls in the evening quite often. However, when she found herself in a long hall with a girl (Who didn't notice her) and a door she'd never seen before, her curiosity got the best of her. Following the girl through the door, green-gray eyes peering around at the room she entered, as she shut the door with a clack the pierced the previously quiet room and echoed like a gong, announcing her-previously-quiet entrance. So she walked up to the other girl, who was laying on a couch, a soft smile lingering on her pink lips as her eyes continued to dance around the room. They finally rested on the girl, and she said in a lilting tone, " Hi. I'm Riley. Do you know where we are?" She then turned away, walking around the room, observing the books, the banners, and the writing table. She'd never seen this room before, although she must've walked down that hall numerous times. Odd, how it just seemed to.... appear into being. Not unknown, here at Hogwarts, of course. Her quick eyes skimmed over a few book titles, but after a moment, she turned back to the other girl, her small smile tugged into a grin after a moment, " Odd." She said in a clear voice, yet somehow obviously to herself. This room was odd, no other word to describe it as Riley saw it. Probably magical, obviously, because this was Hogwarts, after all. She reached a hand up to push back her long locks, that fiery shade of red almost glowing, her wide eyes peering straight into the girl, not looking away, like a cat. Everything about her was quirky, odd, and she obviously didn't care about first impressions, and even if she did, she wouldn't know what kind she was giving.

Good, she didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea if they saw it. "Hi. I'm Riley. Do you know where we are?

Liberty almost raised an eyebrow at this. Honestly it made her almost question the girl's sanity. So abrubt? No proper introductions? Hmm. She didn't mind that the girl's curiousity had probably caused her to to pass limits of what was considered polite, by coming in uninvited and unexpectedly. Someone else being in the room made Liberty feel slightly uncomfortable. Even though she had now found it, somehow it felt like hers already, almost as if it had been designed specifically for her. Realising that she should probably answer, she pulled herself out of her thoughts. "No, I don't," she said shortly. What else was there to say? She squirmed slightly, not liking that the girl was skimming over the book titles as well. She was a little too observant, in Liberty's opinion, and Liberty felt relieved when she turned around to face her instead. When Riley's smile turned into a grin, Liberty found that she couldn't help but smile back. Smiles were always infectious to her. "Odd." Thought the other girl had clearly been speaking to herself, she decided to respond anyway. "Yes, it is." And so are you, she added to herself mentally. How had she not noticed this girl before? That was to show you how much of a shell she lived in. "I'm Liberty, by the way," she added, before wondering if Riley would find this, a normal introduction, strange. [/div]

Riley had been over-observing the girl as she spoke, not yet picking up on the awkwardness of the conversation, if you could even call it that, Riley's smile only grew when Liberty's did. Maybe, despite the suddenness of their meeting, they could be friends. "Nice to meet you then, Liberty." She said simply. Perhaps this girl wanted her to leave. Riley wouldn't know, she'd never been good at reading people. She gave a small shrug in response to her thoughts, tiny shoulders bobbing up once and then back down into place, so quick you would miss it if you blinked. It didn't matter, she figured. If the girl wanted Riley to leave, then she could say so. She didn't even think that maybe the girl would think that rude, or weird, it's what Riley would do. Honesty is the best Policy, after all. You have to tell people what your thinking, otherwise how would they know! "Exactly." She murmured to herself. Her eyes came back around to rest on Liberty once more, as she rose her voice slightly, "How'd you find this place?" She asked, not quite sure herself if she was talking to Liberty, or thinking aloud as she often did. Noticing the girl squirming, she then offered, without even waiting for an answer, "Oh, I can go if you like. I don't mind." She blinked once, now catching on that she'd probably intruded on her. Ah, oh, well, it's not like she could go back in time or anything. She reached back up to push her hair back once more, already a little annoyed with it, wishing she had her clip with her. She shifted her weight unto her other foot, clasping her hands behind her, a habit often used. She waited for an answer now, fully ready to leave if that's what she wanted, although she would be a little disappointed.

Liberty felt slightly uncomfortable with the way the other girl was watching her. Was something out of place? Was her robes untidy? Was her messy hair even messier than usual? Did Riley find something strange about her? Naturally, she began fidgeting, smoothing out her adjusting her robes properly as she sat on the couch, pulling her hair in front of her and running her fingers through it nervously. "Nice to meet you then, Liberty." "Nice to meet you too," she responded automatically, and was surprised to find that she really meant it. Riley seemed different from the usual person, and different was always something that Liberty favored about people. When she said 'exactly,' which Liberty presumed was again to herself, she stayed silent this time not sure of what to respond.
"How'd you find this place?" How did she find this place? She had just been walking around, hoping to discover another of Hogwart's countless secrets, when the door had just appeared. Just like that. She hadn't said anything had she? Not that she was aware of, unless she spoke to herself without realising it. She hadn't touched anything that might have triggered the door to appear either. She had walked along this corridor before but never seen it. "That is...a really good question," she told the other girl, looking up to meet her eyes for the first time. "I have no idea. I was just walking about and it sort of just..appeared I guess."
When Riley offered to leave she immediately began shaking her head before the girl could even get the sentence out fully. "No, no of course not," she told her quickly. "It's ok, you can stay. You just surprised me that's all." She smiled in attempt to seem more friendly and warm, though it wasn't one of her 'real' smiles it was still genuine. "So what year and house are you in? If you don't mind me asking." How could she have not noticed this girl before? That was to show you the big shell Liberty lived under. She hoped they weren't in the same year or house, at least that would justify it a bit.

Riley had been watching the girl fidget with a mix of confusion and horror. Had she done something wrong? If she hadn't, then why was the girl acting so awkward? It hadn't yet occured to Riley how awkward she could make conversation, and it probably never would. Her words, "Nice to meet you too." Sounded sincere, and shocked her out of her thoughts, "Oh- that's good." She murmured to herself, before glancing up to meet Liberty's eyes, and Riley realized it's the first time Liberty had looked at Riley, I mean really look at her. She smiled. This was good, at least... Riley thought so. "I have no idea. I was just walking about and it sort of just..appeared I guess." Riley nods, chin dipping down once, quick, before she grinned, "Ah, things tend to do that here at Hogwarts, don't they?" It was true, what with the moving staircases, suits of armor, and ghosts going through doors that weren't really doors- just a wall, or were locked, it was easy to get confused. When Liberty said she could say, Riley's hands came swung forwards and up, to be clasped in front of her chest, instead of behind her back, as she grinned, "Good. I didn't want to leave. I'm a 6th year, Gryffindor." The girl seemed familer, but couldn't be in Gryffindor... Riley knew most people around her age, and Liberty seemed to be close. She also figured she seemed too nice to be a Slytherin (Although she probably shouldn't make assumations based on being nice, but Slythering did tend to have a mean streak), so, making an educated guess, she figured she was Hufflepuff, or Ravenclaw. Riley let her hands drop to her sides now, still grinning a little wider then a normal person would on average, but no one ever said Riley was average. Not that she had anything against average people! She just found them... boring. Tagging; Liberty Outfit; School Robes Words; 319 Notes;

Liberty felt a bit bad when Riley watched her fidget with a mixture of confusion and horror. Why oh why couldn't she be just a little bit better at these social confrontations? And yes, to her they were confrontations though she was sure no one intended to make it seem that way. She was just that bad at talking to people... she wasn't exactly your typical social butterfly. She was glad when Riley seemed convinced that Liberty did, indeed, find it a pleasure to meet her and that she was more than welcome.
"Ah, things tend to do that here at Hogwarts, don't they?"
|
Her smile from before widened as she nodded in agreement. "Yes, they do." It was true. Sometimes when she was walking up a step, one of the steps would suddenly disappear causing her to fall- she one ended up in the hospital wing because of it. Another time a door had appeared, just as this one did, but when she moved to open it it had disappeared again and turned back into a wall that laughed at her and told her to hurry up and get to class before she was late. Hogwarts was a very strange place.. that was also one of her favourites in this world. She had always longed to explore the Forbidden Forest, or even go near to it but had been afraid. The closest she had been was for Care of Magical Creatures class, and that had been with a whole group of people- her professor and classmates. And so the magical, mysteriousness of the castle itself quenched her thirst for adventure at least a little. Words could never truly describe her admiration of the castle. She even liked it more than her own home. If her mom were here too, it'd be just perfect. When Riley seemed genuinely glad that Liberty told her she could stay, she felt almost as if that joy was her own- she loved making people happy. If she had told Riley to leave (which she never would have done anyway), she would have felt terrible and probably ended up leaving herself and searching the whole school for the girl to apologise. She enjoyed doing even the littlest things to make others happy. She knew had it been herself, and someone had indicated to not caring for her company, it would have hurt Liberty deeper than they would ever think as a result of her insecurities. "I'm a 6th year, Gryffindor." She nodded at this, slightly reassured. Well, at least she wasn't that ignorant. It would explain why she had never seen the girl. Liberty spend most of her free time in the Library or Common Room, though it wouldn't be strange to find her outdoor she usually preferred to go outside of those two areas only if she was with friends, although there had been a few exceptions when the weather had simply been too tempting for her to stay indoors by herself. "I'm in Ravenclaw, a year below you," she responded. [/div]

Riley overestimated that Liberty was feeling bad, and felt bad herself for that, her smile faltering. Riley automatically assumed that if she spoke to someone who was at least partially kind, they were her friend, and if she did something wrong, she tended to blame herself for it, and that just proved how protective she was of her friends. "Yes, they do." Is what she said, and Riley looked back up at her to see her smile widened, which brought Riley's own smile back to her lips, and she bobbed her head in response, causing her hair to go flying around her head in such a hectic manner it mirrored Riley's own behavior. She was such a quirky, odd girl, she tended not to have any really close friends, but that was fine with her. The hard part was when she was home. Her foster parents just didn't understand her, and the other kids were always so mean, especially when she started going to the 'special school' is what her 'parents' and they called it. She'd gotten over it, convinced herself they were just bullies, and it worked, most of the time, anyways. "I'm in Ravenclaw, a year below you." Riley nodded once more. This made sense, why she seemed familiar, but not anyone she'd actually spoken too. Riley stopped nodding, realizing she had been for a moment longer then someone normally would. Oh well. "So...." Riley said, holding the 'O' sound out in her soprano voice, "Uh.... what were you reading?" She asks, the thought just coming to her that Liberty had been reading before Riley had.... intruded. Riley wasn't much of a reader, simply for the fact it was a lot of a sit down thing. When she read, she read aloud, and normally while walking around, more like she was reading from a script then anything else. The kids at her foster home hadn't liked that very much. Liberty smiled at the sight of Riley's hair flying about her as she nodded, and thought that her appearance definitely mirrored her personality. She fidgeted around a bit, not quite sure what else to say. She was never quite good at making conversation, and she especially was not good at 'small talk'. When the girl asked what she had been reading, she was glad that it had slipped out of site. "Oh, nothing much," she smiled. "I had just picked it up when you came in actually, so I didn't really start reading yet. Just one of the books from those shelves," she told her.
Liberty was highly experienced in answering questions sufficiently, without really giving someone the information they had originally wanted. She was pretty sneaky in that way. Whenever someone asked her about her home, or parents, she often did the same thing and was usually convincing about it. Still, just to be on the safe side she decided to turn the conversation around to Riley and change the subject.
"So what do you like to do in your free time?" she asked, genuinely curious. Somehow she doubted it would be the typical answers. Who was this strange, quirky girl and how had she never seen her before? She wondered what the girl's friends thought of her. Did she have any close friends? Usually people who were 'different' were usually secluded from tight-knit circles of friends, and while they would have friends it wasn't the way say, best friends would be. And Riley was certainly different.
Somehow, it was people that were the oddest that were the most precious at times. At least, that's what the muggle fiction books that Liberty had read made it seem like. She honestly did not know enough people to really judge it on reality. She was not close to many, as she rarely let people get close to her, though the ones she were close too she treasured, and was a true friend too them in return. She couldn't imagine what it'd be like to have absolutely no close friends.

"Oh, nothing much, I had just picked it up when you came in actually, so I didn't really start reading yet. Just one of the books from those shelves." Riley's green-gray eyes peered straight at Liberty, as if peering into her. She felt as if the whole truth wasn't being told, as she hadn't been given a direct answer, but brushed off the thoughts after a moment of pondering. If it really interested her, it'd pop back into her head at a later time, as many things often did for her. When she asked what Riley liked to do, she looked a little confused for a moment, but then grinned as if the confusion had never been there, "Oh! I do all kinds of things. I tend to have many interests, but be stuck on one, and then in a week be stuck on another!" She said, speaking a little too quickly, "I love animals, and Quidditch, and just talking to people, ohh, I've like skipping a lot lately, too." She looks quite excited about this, as if she's just figured out she likes skipping. Which she has. As for the speaking with people, she tends to just make small talk with people, which she try's not to think about to often. Here is better then foster care, no matter what, she had convinced herself. Underneath Riley's odd, funny, carefree manner, she was a bomb, just ticking to go off. All those feelings boiling underneath from her not-so-pleasent past, and even from now. Even seh wasn't sure what would happen when she did explode, but she knew it was a day she wasn't looking forwards too. She pushed the nasty thoughts away, and her eyes re-focused on Liberty, and she placed another smile on her lips as she often did. Tagging; Liberty Outfit; School Robes Words; 301 Notes;

Liberty resisted the feeling to squirm again when Riley's eyes seemed to peer through her, but was glad when the other girl did not pursue her question. They had just met and she did not want her thinking that she was strange or anything, or attracted to the dark arts- she really was not. It was just a coincidence, and this would not be the first time that people got the wrong impression of Liberty. Not that she was not strange.. she was, she knew that. She wasn't like most of the other girls she knew, though at heart she was she tended to be a bit too introverted most of the time, and had many odd little qualities that she had never seen in anyone else.
Liberty nodded in response to Riley's upbeat, hyper-sounding answer. She was not quite sure how to respond to that, as she herself was usually a more calm type of person. When people got all excited and spoke quickly, and she did not share in their excitement, she was never really sure what she should do. Her own calm behavior just seemed to clash oddly with it. "I like Quiddich too," she said with a smile, as it was the only thing she really found in common with the two of them. She liked animals but she wasn't particularly fond of them (except for her own pets), but she definitely was not keen on talking to people. Except for people she were really comfortable with, which was not very many.
"Skipping?" she asked, a bit confused. "Oh the rope thing," she said, remembering she had read about it in a muggle book. "That sounds fun," she said, and it did. She wanted to ask more about it, as she had never really understood the concept of jumping over a rope, but was afraid of sounding like a complete idiot. She noticed when the girl seemed to have thought of something that bothered her, and for the first time the smile slipped off her face and her eyes gazed elsewhere. Soon though, she seemed to wake up back to reality and look back at Liberty as before with the same smile.
The momentary change set Liberty thinking. Somethings she thought things through deeper than she should, but often times she was right. She wondered if the constant smile and cherry, quirky attitude was just a mask. "Everything ok?" she asked, in a tone that showed she genuinely cared, and was not just asking out of politeness.

Riley didn't even notice how uncomfortable Liberty seemed when Riley looked at her, and that just proved how in unobservant she could be. She nodded in agreement at the note about quidditch; it seemed to be one of the only things the two had in common. "Oh the rope thing, Riley started to look confused at this... rope... thing....?? Skipping did not involve a rope. Then it clicked. "Oh!! I think you mean Jump Rope! Speaking of Jump Rope, I like too Jump Rope as well." She nodded, grinning widely. "Everything ok?" These words hit hard for Riley, and her grin escaped immediately. All this time, ever sense her mother died, no one had ever asked her that. No one. No one had cared enough, liked her enough, or knew enough. They all thought Riley was just another 'out there' kind of girl, never caring about anything. Truthfully, she would be one of those--uncommon--people, if life had gone the way it should had. But it hadn't. Her mother had died, and her father didn't care. She was utterly alone. Surrounded by her 'friends' and schoolmates, and utterly alone. The question just proved it to her. Liberty, whom she'd only known for, what, maybe 20 minutes, asked her is she was okay. After all these years, Riley still felt alone. Glancing at her feet, she seemed to crumple in on herself, slumping, hands fiddling in front of her, shifting her weight from one foot to the next, and gnawing on her lip. She didn't meet eyes with Liberty, but managed to croak out a lie. "Fine." She immediately was ashamed of herself. She just lied. She was a liar. And to Riley, there was nothing worse. That just proved how Riley felt about herself, how insecure and alone she felt. Not to mention; Riley is an awful liar. Tagging; Arianne Outfit; Robes Words; 306 Notes; Ah, do you mean jump rope? Liberty's concern only grew when she saw the grin completely disappear from Riley's face. She was sure now that she was onto something... something was certainly hurting this girl, but she had no idea what. Whatever it was though, Liberty knew she wanted to help in any way she could. Whether it meant getting her to talk about it, or the opposite- just staying out of it and letting Riley deal with it herself. Everyone dealt with stuff in different ways, after all. As the seconds passed, Liberty saw the girl's happy appearance grow more and more painful, and to her it seemed as if she was watching a glass break, or the sun fall apart and drop down from the sky.
Ironically, that was what Riley sort of reminded her of- the sun. She seemed very bright and energetic. The sun was a funny thing though- it was the reason they could all be alive at that moment, yet at the same time it could cause death and destruction. Even though she barely knew the girl, it bothered her to see the girl who had previously been so joyful look so torn apart. Maybe she should not have brought it up by asking if she was okay... but Liberty of all people knew that it was not easy or nice to just suppress things that were bothering you, and have no one to talk to about it. When you bottled up emotions, you tended to explode at some point in time.
"Fine." The look on her face, not to mention the way in which Riley croaked out the word spoke in volumes saying that she was not fine. Liberty often did that herself though- who didn't, really? A lot of people she knew lied when people asked them if they were okay, just some were more convincing and well others... not so much. Like Riley here. She shifted aside on the couch and patting the seat next to her. "Wanna talk about it?" she asked with a small, kind smile.

Riley looked even worse now. She just lied. Flat out, no loop holes, lied. Since when did she lie? The only exception to her no lying rule was the whole wizarding world thing, and that wasn't a lie. That was hiding the truth (Which she disagreed with in most subjects, but not this one), which was different from lying. But Liberty had asked her a question, and she just... answered with the complete untruth. That was awful. To Riley, lying was a great sin, something awful, something almost soul destroying. Only the worst of people lie, like she just did.
Wanna talk about it? These words surprised, and Riley looked back up at Liberty, biting her lip, hard. She wasn't sure how to respond. She wouldn't lie again, that was for sure, and she could just say no. But this question surprised her as much as the last, no one ever talked to her about this kind of thing, no one ever told her their problems, and she never told anyone her's. Despite her normal, open, I'm all ears, and I tell all, outside mask, Riley was a very private person, and this she just figured out herself.
"I...." She started, obviously feeling awkward, not looking at Liberty as much as she could, "I'm sorry. For lying. I hate liars.... and...." She took a breath, before continuing quickly, her words trailing on to her next, making it hard to understand, "It's really not important, it's stupid, I should be over it. But I'm just in foster care, and my mother's dead, and I haven't seen my sister, and my father hates me, and no one likes me, but it's really stupid, I have tons of friends here, and I don't know why I act so foolish sometimes I just kinda.... do." She breathed in a deep breath her sentences quick and pointed, ready to bounce back and stab at her once more, and she had to prepare herself for when they did.

Liberty watched as Riley looked back up at her, seemingly surprised. Liberty did not blame her. A lot of the time, even your friends could unintentionally overlook things that are bothering you. She herself was a very quiet person, and there were things that did bother her, mostly concerning her family, but even though she was not the best actress she had spent five years in this school with not a single person finding out about it. Not one. A few had asked, to their credit, but she had not opened up to them and they had not pressed her, thankfully. She sensed the other girl's awkwardness, and decided that she definitely would not press her if she did not want to speak about whatever it was. If she did though, Liberty would be the best listener she could be.
"It's really not important, it's stupid, I should be over it. But I'm just in foster care, and my mother's dead, and I haven't seen my sister, and my father hates me, and no one likes me, but it's really stupid, I have tons of friends here, and I don't know why I act so foolish sometimes I just kinda.... do." The words were spoken quickly, and she had to listen carefully to catch all of them- and despite this, she still had trouble interpreting one or two things Riley said. She leaned forward in her seat, propping her elbows on her knees and placing her head in the little cup that her hands joined together to form. It took a few moments for all of it to even register, and Liberty found herself being hit by mini-shock waves at the revelation. Her first impression of the girl had been one of carefree joy, and eccentric quirkiness. Sometimes she forgot that even the people who did not look it had messy, painful pasts too.
"I'm sorry," were the first words that left her mouth. And she was. She did not just say it robotically, because it was the 'right' thing to say when someone told you that kind of thing. She really felt for the girl in front of her. "I'm really sorry you had to go through all of that," she added, not in a pitying way, but more with a tone of understanding. She knew well enough that most people did not care for pity, they just wanted someone to understand them. She was still rather shell shocked by suddenly seeing another side to Riley, the side underneath the mask she wore.
The way Liberty saw things, most people wore a mask- the person they were in general, around people. And then there was their true personality. It was a big change to see someone's mask evaporate and a deeper side of them revealed. "What do you mean no one likes you though?.. I'm sure you have tons of friends, you seem like a really nice person to hang out with." It was true, though 'nice' was probably not the best word. 'Fun' or 'interesting' may have better suited, but the intent behind the word was the same nonetheless.
