Hid feet beat the familiar path to the great hall, the now familiar oddities of Hogwarts just background details. He no longer thought about the trick staircases or the door which could only be opened by a touch on that one panel but only if it was a Tuesday. When he had first arrived at the school, coming from muggle parents who were none too happy about their son’s choice of secondary school, it had all seemed so marvellous and exciting and terrifying. Now days, it was going back to the muggle world that felt unfamiliar and wrong.
James sighed to himself – it was supposed to be dinner time! He shouldn’t even have been carrying his bag! Then again, he probably shouldn’t have let that Billywig loose in Divination. Although it had livened up the lesson somewhat when one of the Gryffindor girls had levitated from her seat for ten minutes until the effects of the sting finally wore off. He had apologised later and luckily she’d laughed and forgiven him. James could be forgiven most things when he turned on his charm. He felt that the last two hours cleaning out the fire-place in the divination room without magic was more than enough punishment to be getting on with.
It wasn’t until James reached the stair case leading to the entrance hall that his brain finally woke up, having been alerted to the smell of cooking by his grumbling stomach. All the best food was probably gone though, he thought bitterly. Then again, he could always sneak down to the kitchens later if he was hungry. James’ face lit up at the thought of imminent food. Maybe some of his friends were still sitting in there waiting for him too. He didn’t get his hopes up on the last point – his friends had long ago given up on waiting for him after detentions, they would have spent most of their lives sitting waiting if they had!
The Gryffindor boy reached the final step, with his stomach making itself heard rather forcefully now. Just then, James’ bag broke. The boy let out a stream of obscenities as his books tumbled across the polished floor, skidding in all directions. His heavy transfiguration book made a loud clang as it hit a suit of armour. The suit began complaining loudly as James ran across to collect the escaped book. “Yeah, alright! Shut up!”, he shouted at the empty helmet. He picked up his transfiguration book and turned to collect the rest as his care of magical creatures book scurried for freedom down the corridor that ran towards the Kitchens.
This had not been a good day.
