APPEARANCE
HAIR: Brown/Blond
EYES: Blue
HEIGHT: six foot exactly
WEIGHT: 185
DETAILED:
James is a boy who takes great pride in his appearance. His dishevelled hair is the result of much care and dedication, and more than a little narcissism. It is naturally brown but he likes to make the most of blond hair dye, and unlike many dyers, he love the effect of his brown roots coming through. His eyes are a dark blue, not bright and alert but deep and thoughtful with a tendency to sparkle a little when he's being mischievous. His lips are quite big for a guy and pale and his brilliant smile is a regular occurrence. His nose is the only feature of his body he would change. He doesn't like how wide his nostrils are and if given the choice, he would probably it magically altered.
Body shape wise, James is toned, and he knows it. He plays Quidditch as often as he can and goes for a jog around the grounds every morning. As a result, his skin is clear and his body is well formed with muscles clearly visible. His height is average but he loves being taller than all the girls.
When not in robes, James is usually seen messing around on the lawns in a pair of baggy, scuffed up jeans and a T-shirt with some clever slogan emblazoned across it. If he's not messing around (rare) then he'll be in a pristine pair of designer jeans and a T-shirt tight enough to show off his body shape. He has no piercings or tattoos but mostly because he's not old enough to get a tattoo. However, he does alway wear one piece of jewellery, a silver thumb ring which he always wears on his left hand. It has no particular significance, he just like to tap it when he's bored or thinking and believes it makes him look cool.

DETAILED:
The first thing you need to know about James is that it doesn't matter who you are, how old you are, what you look like, girl or boy - he will talk to you. And most people end up being charmed by the boy and his brilliant smile. Something he knows all too well. It's just one of his narcissistic qualities. It would be perhaps too far to say he's in love with himself but he knows exactly what his best qualities are and uses them to the best of the his ability. He is very conscious of his appearance and wouldn't dream of leaving his dorm without spending at least half an hour in front of the mirror.
But, his ability to talk to anyone and everyone means that he has a lot of friends. From those he gives a quick hello to in the corridors to those he would literally give his life for. He spends almost all of his time outside lessons with his friends, be it relaxing in the common room, playing in the lawns, Quidditch practise or a running partner, James is rarely alone and doesn't like to be. He doesn't get on well with his family and misses his muggle friends so sees his magical friends as his family. He loves, particularly to chat up girls but would never, ever treat a girl bad, cheat or be disrespectful. He has a reputation of being a ladies man but hardly ever follows through on his advances; he's basically just a harmless flirt. He can't stand guys who don't treat girls well, show their girlfriends off or hide them. Any girlfriend of James' would be the best treated girl in the world - but James would have to stop the excessive flirting!
He's spontaneous, which means if you're looking for something fun and crazy to do, he's the guy to be with. However, his attention span is short which means he rarely listens to instructions (dangerous) and often breaks rules (bad for house points). His extreme personality results in having many friends but also in people getting annoyed with him or being put off by him when he approaches him out of nowhere. He's lost a few good friends because he never listened to what they said if they talked for more than five minutes.
He loves magic. The discovery of the wizarding world turned his life upside down and he took to it like a duck to water. He particularly excels in potions which surprises many considering his inability to follow instruction. James always says it is because the potion can change consistency and from wrong to right so quickly that he's kept on his toes which is exciting and therefore keeps him interested.

HISTORY
MOTHER: Sophie, 40, muggle
FATHER: James (The fourth), 39, muggle
GRANDMOTHER: Esme, 67, muggle
SIBLINGS: None
DETAILED:
James' parents are both muggles, living ordinary and fairly boring muggle lives. The tradition of naming the first born son James began a few generations ago and James (the fifth) has grown to hate the tradition which has meant his Father's constantly pressure him to live up to the name. James (the fourth) owns a shoe makers shop ("James Rivers Shoes. Est 1875") which has been passed down in the family since James Rivers the first. The young James was brought up in the large flat above his Father's shop and the smell of shoe polish and leather still reminds him of childhood. Young James was allowed into shop rear for the first time when he was seven and his Father tried teaching him how to make shoes. However, no matter how hard he tried, the shoes would often end up wrong somehow - three ends to one piece of lace, a different colour to what he had start with, two left footed shoes. His Father put it down to his son's inability to listen to instruction but the boy has since understood it was his magical nature which effected his poor shoe making.
James was supposed to attend a local secondary school but received his Hogwarts letter the summer before he was due to start. Originally his parents were shocked but supportive and his Father joked that maybe he could learn some spells to improve shoe making. James took to magic straight away and loved his flying lessons more than anything he had done in his whole life. Certainly more than shoe making. He excelled in Potions and made friends quickly and easily.
However, when James came home after his first year and told his parents he wanted to become a professional Quidditch player, his parents were in disbelief and barely talked to him for the rest of the summer. Eventually his Mother's disregard thawed and she began trying to coax her son back towards the family business in regular letters accompanying parcels of food and sweets. However, he came back from his second year, having joined his house team all the more determined to follow his goal of becoming a professional player. His parents were disgusted and his Father called him a freak, and thereafter refused to even acknowledge that his son was in the room. His Mother started cooking meals for just two. James sent a few owls round and spent the rest of the summer staying with Hogwarts friends, on couches or in spare rooms. Sophie's Mother (Esme) heard that her grandson had moved out of home and started asking questions. Eventually the Rivers had revealed all, including James' magical talents. Esme was disgusted with her daughter and son-in-laws behaviour and told them so. She refused to talk to the pair until they had accepted their son back, which still has yet to happen. After much digging, she finally discovered how to get in contact with her grandson (many neighbours are confused by her pet owl and put it down to dementia) letting him know that some family still cared.
He hasn't been back to "James Rivers Shoes" since that second year summer but frequently visits his grandmother during the summer holidays. All other school holidays he spends at Hogwarts.

RP SAMPLE:
James's body rocked with the carriage as it sped over the bumps in the ground, pulled by invisible horses or some other magic he didn't understand. His head was out the window, perfectly gelled hair stiff despite the slight wind and speed of the black carriage. He was waiting for his first sight of home. It had been a long summer. He had spent most of it living in the spare room of a school friend, getting a part time job in a local muggle super market to pay some rent. He'd spent some time with his grandmother, living like a normal muggle, rent free. However, she was old and widowed and could not afford much in the way of living or extravagance and James often felt like he was costing her too much money and stress if he stayed too long.
But now he was home. The castle loomed as the rounded a corner and James felt happy for the first time in six weeks. The breeze blew towards him the smell of cooking; the house elves had been busy preparing for the welcoming feast, and River's tummy rumbled in anticipation. From behind him came the sound of the laughter of his friends but the blond boy had ears only for the clatter of wheels bringing him closer and closer to where he belonged.
James took a deep breath and closed his eyes. The robes were comfortable against his skin and felt right, like this was what he was meant to wear for the rest of his life - wizarding robes. A half smile played across his lips. He remembered his first shopping trip to Diagon alley with his parents five years ago - being fascinated by everything the unbelievable road had to offer. His first year robes had long grown out but James, being largely self funded had to wear them as long as he possibly could. This summer though he had managed to save up enough to buy himself a new set. The black was deep and not faded by time and the Hogwarts crest stood bright on his muscular chest, unlike his previous set which wouldn't have been fit for a house elf.
Finally the front steps came into the foreground, illuminated by the torches hanging either side of the large double doors. James's door was open before the transport had come to a complete stop and he stood for a moment just taking it all in, happy to be back. It wasn't long though before he was knocked a step forward by his friends piling out of the black carriage. He laughed at their roughness and fell into step with them, heckling them on their way to find a seat at the feast.
