AUGUSTUS T VERMILLION
FORTY-ONE. SINGLE. FIDGETY. UNSEXUAL.
If he wasn’t such a massive basket case, Augustus would be at the top of his field. Unfortunately, he can’t help but be just a little neurotic, can’t help that he’s about as charismatic as an old shoe. He’s spent his life buried in books, mapping numbers and shapes and waving away anyone who’s tried to get closet o him. Approaching fifty years old, he should be more concerned that he’s alone and friendless, but he really can’t bring himself to care when he’s busy trying to revolutionize mathematics in the wizarding world. He’s outspoken about his ideas, and curious enough that he usually frustrates most of his colleagues into avoiding him entirely by his second day in a new job.
He taught physics at a Muggle school for around fifteen years before deciding that there was no justification in teaching math to people who already understood why it was important. He’s been out of tune with the magical community for his entire life, but at the overcooked age of forty one he’s decided it’s time to dive straight in and learn to swim with the other fish instead of pretending he’s a bird.

BUT I'M HAPPIER ALONE {HONEST}
FRIENDS. FRIENDS. FRIENDS. FRIENDS. FRIENDS.
Augustus hasn’t ever had many friends in his life. In his many years, he can count all his close companions on his hands with a few fingers left over. Despite this, he thinks he’s pretty easy to get along with. If you can get past the obscene amount of questions he asks (honestly, he’s only curious) and the somewhat heavy handed way he takes conversations, he can be a delight to talk to. He’s learned in a multitude of subjects, and can converse about practically anything. He listens better than most people could imagine—he seems almost too self-aware sometimes—and doesn’t even expect the same back. As a friend, he can be a perfect shoulder to lean on. It’s the road that leads to the friendship that is the real difficulty.
Augustus values certain qualities above others. Intelligence is vastly important to him; showmanship for the sake of showmanship is something he very much dislikes. Know-it-all attitudes and unneeded rudeness detract from a person’s overall intellect, he thinks. If you’re really smart, you don’t need to prove it. It’ll show itself.
Inquisitive natured folks are often the people Augustus falls into arms with the most often. He is unafraid to speak up, talk about the elephant in the room, and when others show the same initiative he finds only respect for them. It’s just as well, since those who are asking the questions rarely find themselves in good company with the people who are on the receiving side of inquiry.
As a rather clever man, Augustus loves creative expression. The artistic and expressive peers are ones he relates to, and when he does find himself in conversation with colleagues, these are the people he gravitates towards. In casual settings, he’s a shy person, and doesn’t quite know how to find his voice sometimes. These people are all voice and he loves it.

It ain’t lonely alone
WHAT WOULD WE TALK ABOUT ANYWAY?
LOVERS. LOVERS. LOVERS. LOVERS. LOVERS.
If Augustus stopped being such an anti-social manchild once in a while, he could probably find an equally socially retarded partner to discuss math or something with.
Unfortunately, his only lover was exactly that, and it didn’t work out well for the two of them. The divorce was as messy as it could be for two people who couldn’t rouse any passionate feelings whatsoever for each other.
Augustus doesn’t concern himself very heavily with physical sexuality. If he did find someone he was interested enough in to find attractive, it would be because of the things they said, not the mouth they came from. Sexy for Augustus is someone outclassing him at something he thought he was particularly strong in, someone proving that they can hold their own in a debate. It’s not curves or skin or eyes.

are you happier now?
THAT THE GODS ARE DYING?
ENEMIES. ENEMIES. ENEMIES. ENEMIES. ENEMIES.
Augustus makes more than enough of them. People who don’t think about what they say before they say it, people who don’t have any interest in the world around them, these are people Augustus just doesn’t care enough about to be polite with.
Everything is a series of questions for this man, and when he meets a person for the first time, the question is ‘why are you important?’ It’s up to the person in question to answer the question. Wrong answers don’t disappoint Augustus; but they are just that—wrong. He doesn’t waste his time with people he doesn’t care about.
He tries not to judge when he first meets a person. But ignorance, or any kind of shallow persona (whether adapted or genuine, he doesn't care) is something that grates against him in the most sincere way. Augustus doesn't act very sincere often, but willing stupidity is something that sends him off the handle very quickly.
Disrespect, oh well thats another thing. It's not as if he doesn't hold the world to a overly complicated caste system like some, he has no need for that. But treating others as if they're superior or inferior based on something other than honest skill and integrity is just stupid, and Augustus doesn't much care for stupidity.
He has enough pet peeves to satiate even the most nitpicky of people. But when people are blunt with him, or cut him off, interrupt and roadblock him in any way, he quickly categorizes them to a 'do not care' list in his mind. He understands that sometimes he can be a little overbearing. But he doesn't ever understand why his inquiry would be so aggravating that it calls for flat out rudeness.
Apathy. Augustus is a sinner, too, he knows. Sometimes he can't bring himself to care about every little thing. But important issues (important to HIM issues) are not to be taken lightly in his presence. Respect is key to a good relationship, he thinks. So apathy towards the topics he is most invested in? Not respect. When he gets upset, he gets flustered. It's not threatening, but it is just as frustrating for those around him as it is for Augustus.

THE PSEUDONYMS I ASSUME
OTHERS. OTHERS. OTHERS. OTHERS. OTHERS.
For Augustus, students are his favourite people to be around. He loves being able to discuss in a way that he knows is his playing field. He thinks that the limitations of a school room show exactly how much potential a student has. He feels immense satisfaction seeing a student succeed in his class, even if it wasn’t directly his doing.
Augustus doesn't really do a lot outside of work and his own studies. But he gets along swimmingly with his family, who all don't really have the heart to tell him he's a complete wreck in the charisma field. That's probably why they get along so well. Augustus doesn't take news like that well. They put up with his questions, they listen to his ideas, and that's all he really needs.
He loves his job, loves his family, and loves his studies. That's really all there is to it.
