Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ She was sitting in the great hall, way way beyond the usual lunch time. There was reason for this. She had been studying during lunch - for some reason, somehow she thought that the only way she could finish the difficult ancient runes homework was to do it immediately after class - even though it was lunch time, and most of her friends were down eating lunch. So she'd sat alone in the deserted common room and poured over her books till she was sure that she had gotten every point of the amazingly difficult ancient runes class - though by the end of it she realized that she might have done it way faster if she'd just waited an hour and done it when she was a little more relaxed - and a lot less hungry. Because Arianne could now feel rats running around in her stomach. It gave a protesting grumble, too, and so Ari finished off the last few notes of the last topic, and walked straight down into the deserted great hall.
She was ravenous. She had skipped breakfast because she'd gotten up too late and hadnt had time to prepare for class, and then she'd had practically nothing to eat all day except for a chocolate frog that she still had from her trip in the train - which she had no idea why she'd still preserved. Of course, since it was Arianne's, it was perfectly kept - not melting (despite the heat) and kept perfectly in its pack in a particular drawer near her desk that she kept specifically for food and which she used charms and muggle insect repellents over - and the only adverse effect seemed to be a lack of bounce in the frog (the charm must have worn off) which she didnt really mind all that much. She'd gotten a chocolate frog card too, which she'd neatly discarded - she had alphabetically organized collections and she'd long ago completed all of the cards (except four very rare ones) and gifted the whole thing to a younger student. Her stomach gave another protesting grumble to startle her out of her thoughts, and she sat down on one of the tables, wondering what to do.
Now of course, this was the last place in the world that she was likely to get food. It would not magically appear when it wasnt even meal time - or at least, Arianne was not sure whether it would appear or not but she remembered a note about it in the History of Hogwarts: A Revised Version. And though she had heard of the illegal route to the kitchens - no one could stay for 5 years in the school and not know where the kitchen was - and even unobservant Arianne couldnt ignore the fact that the food magically appeared for the various parties they had - especially after the Ravenclaw quidditch team showed some of its feats. Which reminded her that she'd heard Brandon had made the team, and she should probably be sure to go out and cheer for him. She paused a moment to think about the boy she'd met at the Leaky Cauldron, and another to think about why she was thinking about him, till she was quite red in the face. It was not at all a bad look on her, it added some color to her pale cheeks, though she might have been mortified if someone had caught her there at that moment.

James huffed and puffed his way up the lawn towards the castle. Quidditch practise had gone well except for one minor and one very major detail. The minor detail was that he had been hit on the side of the head by a passing Bludger whilst trying to knock the other one away from his keeper. He's had a few words with his fellow beater while a few of the others hovered around him trying to stem the blood flow. In the end, someone had pushed everyone else aside and performed a simple healing charm which had reduced the cut to a scar in seconds. Unfortunately the blood had already coated his robes at this point and he had to complete the session in soaking robes. The major detail was that practise had been during lunch time and James did not do well on an empty stomach. So, with tummy rumbling and with blood sodden Quidditch robes, he made his way up the front steps into Hogwarts Castle.
Thinking Quidditch tactics, as if on automatic, James' feet beat the familiar path, into the great hall, past all the other tables and to a seat at the Gryffindor table. To be fair, seats at the Gryffindor table weren't hard to come by as no one else appeared to be here. James was so caught up in his sport that he didn;t notice the lack of company or food until he reached for his knife and fork and found them to be distinctly absent. James swore quietly under his breath. He must have completely missed lunch, everyone else had already packed up and left. Well, to the kitchens to beggar some food from the elves then. Sighing and with just a touch of huffing and puffing, James pushed himself to his feet and made towards the exit.
He was just thinking about asking for a chicken sandwich... With extra ham... Ooh, and some salad... And maybe some salsa sauce... when he noticed that he was not, in fact, alone in the great hall. A brown haired girl he knew was sat at the Ravenclaw table looking distinctly more pink than usual. Arianne was in many of his classes and was quite good friends with Kadie, so James new her well enough to say hello. Although, James would say hello to anyone so that didn't really narrow it down. He knew her well enough to say hello and follow that up with a proper conversation. Well, conversation in the loosest possible terms. Conversation for James usually consisted of a series of questions how was this or that lesson? followed by a series of chat up lines one lesson you don't need to attend is beauty class. I'd give you an Outstanding any day! You know, the usual cheesy, harmless flirting which seemed to follow the young Gryffindor.
"Arianne! What on earth are you doing here?"
|
he called out as he walked over to sit at the Ravenclaw table opposite her, hunger forgotten. "You look all hot... I mean, you always look hot, obviously!" He gave her a broad grin and a wink as he leant forward, elbows resting on the table, hands lightly together, "I mean you look warm. Are you alright?"

Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ She was too lost in her own thoughts to see James enter. At any rate, Arianne was not the most observant of people and it generally took some dancing in front of her eyes before she actually noticed the person or thing (or joke) that she was supposed to. That was the reason most of her friends said that she had no sense of humor - it was just that most of the time she did not get the joke, and tended to take it way, way too seriously for her own good. She bit her lip, cupped her head in her hands, and was still looking red - and this, coupled with her school girl-ish two ponytails (she had been annoyed with her hair) made her look like a thirteen year old. At any rate, with both Brandon and food disturbing her thoughts, there was no way she would have seen James despite his rather startling appearance and the fact that he was not at all quiet - except that he insisted on breaking her reverie all on his own.
"Arianne! What on earth are you doing here?"
Arianne had always been a transparent person, and she blushed stunningly at this point. "J-James," she stammered out. "I was just hungry...but I somehow missed lunch," she said, wondering how silly she sounded. It was mostly that he had startled her when she was already thinking about something that embaressed her, and then his words - he started out by saying that she was hot. (Hot? No one had ever called her hot.) Part of her was even flattered a little bit - just a very, very little bit. She knew him to be Kadie's friend, and she had heard that he had strings of girls after him. "H-hot?" she began. "I dont know what you mea-"And then that she looked 'warmer' than usual, which she took as an allusion to the fact that she must look like a red beetroot - which only made her blush more. Damn, but she had no idea how to deal with that.
"I-I-" she began. Then she noticed the fact that he was covered with blood, and dirt. Her mind made her want to clean him up, something that was replaced in about a moment with a look of concern. She struggled to make out the words, "James - I dont know- I dont know if you know it but you have blood on you. Quite a lot of blood. And a scar." What was she saying? Of course he knew he had a scar and blood! It looked more like a poorly done healing spell to Arianne than anything else. She took out a pin from her hair and put it back in, nervous. "I mean - what happened? Are you okay?" She sounded truly sorry for the boy. Which she was. But she was still looking red too. Why was he having this effect on her?

I'm just a devil with love to spare- - - - - - - - - ► Table for two
James loved to flirt. It was just a part of who he was. Many girls had tried to change him, none had succeeded. All those who knew him best just accepted it and usually flirted back. It was like and games and everyone won. No one got hurt and everyone came away feeling a little bit better about themselves. Flirting with the ones who knew how to flirt back was fun but the most fun was flirting with girls like Arianne. The one who got brushed over by the guys chasing the blond with the fake assets. Girls like Arianne had personality. But they were often the ones who got passed up. Most guys would rather go for someone offering themselves on a plate than work a little harder for the ones who were worthwhile. Whichever way you looked at it, it was usually the quiet girls who were at the shallow end of the flirtation pool. James had to force himself not to go into a day dream about a real flirtation pool at this point. But this lack of exposure usually made girls like Arianne the most fun. It took them a while to work out they were on the receiving end of a complement and when they did, their face resembled a beetroot. As charmingly demonstrated in the great hall by Arianne Lane.
Now, this may seem a little cruel at face value but James never went out with the intention to hurt anyone and always flirted in a playful way. When he left girls were usually feeling a little better about the bodies they had been criticising in the mirror that morning or the dimples they had always hated. But most fun was watching the girls struggle to understand what was going on.
James raised his fingers subconsciously to the vivid scar on his head when she pointed it out. He quickly removed his fingers though when a stinging, stabbing pain shot from the scar all the way through his head. That bludger had clearly meant business. But he couldn't help but grin at her tongue-tied choice of words. He waited for her to untie her tongue before he replied, "Oh, it's just a Quidditch accident. Nothing serious."
|
James realised this looked a little like a lie considering the amount of blood covering him, "I was going to have some lunch then head to the hospital wing to get it healed properly. But, like you I seemed to have missed the main event. So it's just the two of us. And here was me thinking Quidditch practise at lunch time was a sin; look at the opportunity fate has thrown into my path. A potential lunch date with a beautiful girl fawning over my battle scars. What boy could be luckier?!" James gave her another wink. Soon the actual chat up lines would begin. The cheesier the better although the more subtle, the better would probably be more fun to see. Arianne appeared not to notice compliments until they had already trotted past. And her eyes did stand out beautifully against her face when she blushed. [/div] Viva Las Vegas! Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Arianne had never really had a problem with how she looked. Most of the time, it didnt cross her mind. A part of that could be attributed, perhaps, to the people she often interacted with - as far as she knew none of her closest friends (except maybe Emmalee) bothered very much with how they looked. And none of the guys she knew (and she was friends with a fair amount) ever seem interested in her romantically, or flirted with her (it would be silly to flirt with someone as clueless as Arianne) - and it hadnt really ever affected her. Who wanted people to flirt with you anyway? It just made things harder because then you had to refuse them politely and in a way that didnt hurt her feelings. Casual flirting, of course, was something Arianne had little or no experience with.
On the rare occasions when she had the time to be looking at the mirror for a reason other than to make sure that her shirt was tucked in properly, she knew that she was reasonably okay looking. Not beautiful (she was pale, and often had dark circles), of course not, not close to hot (no matter what James said - she was thin, short, and amazingly out of shape) - but she was not ugly either. And that had never, ever mattered. What did she have to do with beauty? And yet somehow it mattered now. She was actually sitting and thinking about everything that was wrong with her and she couldnt figure it out. What was wrong with her? She did not hate herself, not like those slytherin girls she knew who spent hours torturing themselves to look beautiful.
"Oh, it's just a Quidditch accident. Nothing serious."
She grimaced when he touched it, it looked painful. She thought for a moment, and said, "Maybe I can help." She dug out her wand from her impeccably neat bag. which she carried around almost everywhere. Generally, she would've been more hesitant about doing magic, but she had to be better than whoever had done the spell, and she had put in hours of work to master this spell last year. She had to start, however, with a spell to clean his robes. "Scourgify," she said, expertly - cleaning spells were all she was good at, considering she had so much practice - Ari couldnt bear dirtiness. She finally finished with a touch up to the wound that should have at least taken out the sting, if not healed it completely.
"Better?" she asked, hesitant, sweet and concerned - Arianne almost always was those things. It was then that she realized what all he'd been telling her while she'd been busy. "Well," she said, blushing again. "Where do you presume we'll get food right now?", she said, wanting to change the topic. A part of her was a little suspicious - why was he saying such things? Could it be that he liked her? But why her? And if it was her, well, she felt bad...because while James was good-looking enough he was definitely not her kind of person. But shouldnt she give him a chance? She blushed slightly more at this reflection. What was she going to tell him?

James studied Arianne's reaction. She seemed perhaps a little confused and deep in thought for the merest moment before ploughing on, ignoring every complement he threw her way. That was fine, she was hard work. Hard work could be fun. He laughed at her reaction when he touched the vivid scar on the side of his forehead, but had to confess he was intrigued when she offered to help. He watched her dig her wand out the bag and was about to protest. As much as he liked Arianne and knew she was a very clever girl and excellent witch, he had no idea what her healing abilities were like. He wasn't about to let her start prodding his wounds, possibly making them worse if he could help it.
He couldn't help it. Her wand was out and waved before he could utter as much as a syllable. He flinched instinctively but was surprised to now find himself wearing clean (or at least cleaner) robes. "oh..."
|
was all he had time to say, relieved that she had not tried to heal his would, before suddenly his head was all but healed. James' hand shot to his head to find only a slight bump on the skin. He would still head up to the Hospital Wing later to have it checked over but Arianne had sorted out most of the damage. "Thanks! That's loads better!" He recovered from the surprise of being suddenly healed with a wink and grin in her direction, "Beautiful, brainy and a good wand hand! Is there anything you can't do Arianne? Food wise, I guess we'll just have to break into the kitchens!" He smiled kindly, hoping she might joke back soon. Flirting was a lot easier when there was humour going in both directions but then James wasn't sitting here because flirting with Miss Lane was easy. The Gryffindor took in her appearance properly for the first time since taking his seat opposite her. Her hair was well kept, but not fussed over like so many girls. It was simple but elegant and it suited Arianne. She had more important things to worry about than her hair; homework for instance. Hey eyes, as ever shone bright and intelligent fro her face which was currently drifting up and down the scale of redness. Her robes were neat and tidy, creased in the right places, obviously she folded them up in her trunk which James had no doubt was impeccably neat. From among the black the eagle sat on his blue crest. He smiled and shook his head slightly. Arianne was such a nice girl. That's exactly what you'd call her. If you didn't know her, she was that girl who was "oh, yeah, she's a nice girl." Mostly unnoticeable unless you were lucky enough to be her friend. James loved these girls. You could talk to them about anything with absolute confidence that the rest of the school wouldn't know it with twenty-four hours. "So then, my lovely lady, what excitement were you wrapped up in which caused you to miss lunch and which gave me the fortune of having you all to myself?" James realised the answer was likely to be homework, but it was polite to ask and he was enjoying the conversation. Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ She realized, a little late, that James was Anko's friend, one of his closer friends perhaps - she knew, at least, that James acted as much as an elder brother to Anko as Anko did to her, which, in some complicated way, made Arianne more like a sister to him too. Which was all that Arianne planned to think of him as, despite the fact that she suspected that he had a little worse on his own mind. She wondered how she even knew that, one of the few people she'd actually dated (and she recalled how terribly awkward that had been) had told her that she never knew it when someone tried to flirt with her - though of course, it might just be that she was older now. And hopefully more experienced.
And of course James was cute, she reflected as she smiled at his compliments. But she doubted they had that much in common. Except that Anko and Kadie, who were two of her closest friends, seemed to like him well enough. But still, she didn't think she could actually go out with him. At the time of her life, she did not think she could actually go out with anyone. It seemed like too much of a time consuming affair. And it was not like anyone was actually falling over trying to go out with her anyway. "Oh, I'm not all that perfect. I think I just demonstrated the two spells I can actually do reasonably well." She was being modest, but also honest. She pretty much sucked at charms and transfiguration and anything involving the use of a wand. "Actually, I'm good at cleaning spells because of practice," she said - she had a habit of randomly cleaning stuff up. "And the healing was so poor a third year should have done it better. Who did it, anyway?"
"We're going to the kitchens?" she asked, a little hesitant - but then decided it was a bit of an emergency. "How?" She hadnt actually ever been there, and she sometimes wondered if she was the only student who hadnt. His next question made her smile slightly. "Oh! There was this amazing question in ancient runes," she said. Ancient runes was fast turning into her second most favorite subject, after History of Magic, but even Arianne was not clueless enough to think it would interest James, so she asked him, "But you look like you were having a pretty eventful match. What hit you?" She paused and then frowned. "And how did the rest of your teammates have lunch?"

I'm just a devil with love to spare- - - - - - - - - ► Table for two
James couldn't help but roll his eyes as Arianne brush off another compliment. He knew she was a Ravenclaw who studied in the same league as Kadie and she was a prefect, as displayed by the badge shining against her black uniform. Clearly she wasn't the sort of student who was only good at cleaning spells, even if she couldn't see that herself. James, on the other hand, was that sort of student. He wand work was basic and certainly didn't impress many of his teachers who expected better in OWLs year. In fact, the only subject he actually excelled in was Potions which surprised many people as James' attention span was roughly equal to that of a potato. Most were surprised that he managed to spend an entire lesson concentrating on one set of instructions from the board. James however, said his good grade were due to the fact that Potions was the only class he actually found exciting; anything could go wrong at any stage, read one instruction wrong and a potion for dreamless sleep turned into a draught for endless sleep. James needed that kind of excitement and risk to keep him focused on the lesson. It was probably the reason he was such a good Quidditch player. Not that the bump on his head was much testament to that.
He frowned slightly at her mention of the shoddy work which had existed prior to her own attempt, "oh, it was just one of the guys on the team. They were going to spend more time on it but I told them to hurry up because we only had half an hour left to practise before lunch would be over."
|
He realised that to anyone who wasn't that into their Quidditch, this sounded like a slightly rash statement. But to those truly passionate about the game, as James and the rest of his team were, it was perfectly reasonable thinking with their first match looming ever closer. James had only been bleeding and was easily fixable with a trip to the hospital wing. All he'd needed was patching up, he could worry about actually healing after they had practised some of their new formations. That had been the thinking at any rate. James laughed lightly at her hesitancy over the idea of storming the kitchens. But then, she wasn't the sort of student who snuck down to the Kitchens to get food for the common room parties. Mr Rivers, on the other hand, had long been that sort of student. "It's actually incredibly easy to get in there if you know how! And the House Elves practically trip over themselves to give you as much food as they can before you burst!" He didn't move to get up though, he was enjoying the conversation. Arianne was fun, even if she didn't realise it. He had to give another roll of the eyes as to her reason for the late lunch, Kadie was the same, Ancient Runes nutters! James would never understand what could be so exciting about a bunch of symbols which dated back to God knows when! Arianne moved onto Quidditch talk before he could tease her about the Ancient Runes nonsense though. "Oh, someone asked me what the time was so I tucked my bat underneath my arm to check my watch when I took a blugder from behind. Kind of ironic for a beater given we're the only players on the pitch actually armed against bludgers! Well it hit me so hard my face went flying into my broom handle. Luckily my broom's ok!" He said with a district note of love in his voice. His broom, although by no means the best model on the market was his pride and joy. He'd spent his entire summer after first year working nonstop and had saved himself enough money to buy his own broomstick, ready to prove himself worthy of the team in his second year. "Yeah, the rest of the team got lunch before practise. I was somewhat held up by a detention! Still, what can you do!?" He moved on to more pressing matters, "So Arianne, talking seriously for a moment, when are you going to find yourself a nice boyfriend? Or are you holding out on me?" He gave her another classic wink and toothy grin. [/div] Viva Las Vegas! Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ She did not catch the roll of the eyes, but if Arianne had been the type of person who might roll their eyes she might have rolled her eyes at the talk about the quidditch. Arianne did not really understand quidditch that well. Oh of course she knew about the rules and stuff, she'd read a book on it and attended flying classes in the first grade when she'd been totally excited about flying. But then she had discovered her very severe fear on heights, fell off a broom after fainting half-way on her trip up, and then ended up in the hospital wing with three bones broken, and she had never been coaxed on a broom again, even though she'd gotten a A in quidditch that year. (She had been good at the written assignments and had gotten credit for writing a few papers on the history of quidditch - and the professor took pity on her, or she might never have passed.)
His comment on the injury did make her frown though. "Oh but James, that could be really dangerous," she told him. "It was a head injury after all." But his story, and the humorous way he told it, did coax a reluctant smile out of her. "I didnt even know watches worked in hogwarts," she told him. She was pretty sure that most electric equipment did not work in hogwarts because the magic around made them go haywire, but watches were pretty okay and ran on battery, so they might work. Arianne, though punctual, did not actually rely on watches - she did listen for the school clock, and she generally liked to just reach as early as she could for everything.
"Luckily your broom's okay?" she told him, with a slight smile. "Luckily you're okay." She shook her head, he confused her but it was still fun to talk to him. "The next match - the first match - is gryffindor versus ravenclaw, right? I must come watch." She tried to avoid thinking about why she wanted to come. It was probably just a crush and would probably fade. And hey, she wanted to cheer her house. She did understand the house-spirit part of quidditch, if not anything else. She had more than enough of that, even though she preferred to show it in other ways that did not involve bludgers and heights - like answering questions in class.
She refrained from commenting on the detention, though she might have given him a talking-to about taking the detention so lightly if she had not been so hungry. She half stood up, because the entire description of the house-elves plying you with food was quite tempting, especially considering the fact that there were mice running around in her stomach. His next question, however, made her sit back down, her mouth forming a 'o' out of shock at his rather bold question that had shockingly been on the topic that was on the top of her mind anyway. She turned red again (and she had just returned to her normal color!) and then she looked down, unwilling to meet his eye, because she knew he might be able to guess at least some of what she was thinking from her face.
"I-I-" she started, fumbling to find the words. "I dont have a boyfriend right now." She hadnt since Liam and that had been what, a few years ago now? His next statement made her even more confused. Holding out on him? What did that mean? "Waiting for someone special I guess. I mean. Someone to come along. But I dont-" She paused, then frowned again, she wouldnt lie. "I dont know if I even have the time...OWLs and all...its too much of a distraction. I dont need it..." She realized she was rambling, and then got up again, finally venturing to meet his eye. "You said something about the kitchens? I'm guessing you're as hungry as me...maybe more because you just played so much quidditch?"

I'm just a devil with love to spare- - - - - - - - - ► Table for two
James glanced down at his watch. It had never occurred to him before as to why it worked at Hogwarts, none of the other electrically operated things he owned worked in the castle grounds. But his watch had been a constant companion of over four years. It was a Mickey Mouse one, where Mickey's hands were the hands of the clock. It had been a gift from his Grandmother many years ago and was one of James' most treasured possessions, obviously not as high up the list as his broomstick but the watch definitely made an appearance in his top five. "Now you mention it, I have no idea how it works. I'll have to ask Kadie, she's bound to know. She's always good at knowing things I don't!"

He gave Arianne another smile. James laughed at Arianne's shock over his concern for the broom instead of himself. She definitely wasn't a Quidditch person. If he had had this conversation with Kadie or Anko, they would be sitting nodding about how his broom had had a lucky escape. People mended easily and painlessly enough with a quick trip to the hospital wing. Brooms, on the other hand, took months of working full time, living rent-free on friends sofa and a lot of walking past shops full of things he wanted to buy. That had been a rough summer and he had shown it, turning up to Hogwarts with second hand books and his only souvenir of his summer holidays, a new broom. "I'm not actually sure who the first match is against, the schedule hasn't been posted yet. But we should know soon. I can't wait for the first game - I feel like I haven't played in forever!" James dropped the Quidditch talk quickly though, he knew Arianne wasn't really interested and he couldn't blame her. If you just weren't into something it was hard to sustain a conversation on that subject. Besides, much more interesting things were happening in response to the last of James' topics. He watched her half stand up, then sit resolutely back down, her face unable to mask the shock. He kept the smile from his face, although he could not hide the laughter in his eyes. He knew Arianne was taking this conversation far more seriously than he had intended and didn't want to seem as though he was mocking her. He listened to her mumble through her thoughts and excuses, watching the blush rise up her neck and tint her cheeks. The rosy tinge really did bring out the clear, intense blue of her eyes. The question of why she was single was a genuine question (the next bit had been something more of a joke). James didn't understand why a girl as beautiful and clever as Arianne didn't have a boyfriend. He thought it could never be someone like him, he was too outgoing for Arianne. James tended to steal all the attention in a room, never out of spite, but usually because he was doing something stupid and distracting. James needed a girlfriend who either wasn't afraid to be up making an idiot of herself with him, or someone who was happy to watch and laugh and pat him on the head when it was all over. Arianne, he felt, would be the girl slapping him round the head (not literally) and scolding him when it was all over. Plus, as this conversation showed, Arianne didn't really understand boys like James. Sometimes James wondered if James understood boys like James. Then he usually stopped wondering because his head hurt. When she had finally stumbled her way through several half sentences and a change of subject, James smiled kindly and looked up at her. Her eyes met his at last and James' own, murkier blue eyes twinkled. "Don't have time? What extra time do you need? You just do all the normal stuff but have someone to do it with." he said with a little laugh. "What about Anko? You guys hang around a lot I've noticed... Just throwing it out there!" He did wonder about that option. While James believed the Anko/Arianne relationship to be something akin to his own relationship with Kadie. Although with Anko and Arianne James could see something working but to think about himself with Kadie was just weird. "I know that it's me you're desperate to be with, Arianne, and I understand, I really do. But you'll just have to join the queue I'm afraid. Although, I can't lie - you are rather high up my list!" He gave her another wink and, without moving from his seat, answered her change of subject question, "You wanna head to the kitchens? I can show you the way. I am rather enjoying being alone with you at last..." James leaned across the table and raised his eyebrows a couple of times, suggestively. James knew this conversation probably wasn't moving towards the kitchen. He wasn't sure the flirting could continue if they were walking and talking. Arianne seemed to be having trouble just sitting. Thoughts of food had flown from his mind. This was much more fun than food. [/div] Viva Las Vegas! Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ "Oh ya, Kadie always knows this sort of thing," she said with a smile. "She's quite amazing, actually." Arianne actually really admired Kadie, and she enjoyed spending time with her - even though it was mostly doing stuff like studying for ancient runes - over time they'd become good friends. In fact, Arianne was almost surprised how many friends she'd made over the years simply because they would study with her - Cassandra, who first made her like potions - or Yoora, the older Hufflepuff, who she really admired and respected, and a lot of other people who'd gone from being in her study group to being some of her closest friends.
She shrugged at all the quidditch excitement, it didnt make that much sense to her, though she knew a lot of her friends were quite involved in it. Her intense fear of heights made it hard to even watch when her friends were playing, so she avoided it. Plus, it was the time thing - a few hours was hard to take out of her schedule. Still, perhaps it was time to get over her fears and take some time out for herself - wasnt that what everyone was telling her? And perhaps she could take some potions essays along to make the whole thing a little more productive and not destroy her schedule completely. "Oh well, I'll definitely come to watch," she told James. There, now she'd have to go no matter what, now that she'd committed herself, though Ari had a feeling she might have gone anyway and this was just a good excuse.
She thought she would be glad when he left off of quidditch, but his next topic made her even more uncomfortable. Especially because she was, or at least she thought she was, a realist. "I spend most of my day studying, or attending classes, and a few hours in the night patrolling, and I dont even have enough time in my schedule to take another class or take a job I want to. Unless I find a guy who'd happily study with me and still enjoy it, I'll date him...until then, there's pretty much no chance..." she said, trying to be very pragmatic. Especially because she knew that he'd be put off even if he somewhat liked her after this particular story, because come on - she did not see him as the kind of guy who would be happy studying with her at all.
When he mentioned Anko, however, she gave him, 'really-you're serious'? look and then a frown. "Come on James! Anko is like my brother." To imagine him any other way was really, really tough. Him and her romantically engaged? Arianne couldnt even begin to imagine it. "It'd be like you going out with...with...Kadie." Well, okay, she had no idea if James and Kadie were going out at all, no one tended to tell her the latest school gossip, and if they did she didnt remember it. So she hoped she had not committed some kind of faux pas. "Well, you might go out with her. You guys might even make a good pair. But Anko and me that is SO not happening. Ever." She thought James and Kadie would make a pretty good pair, actually, if that ever got around to happening.
His next words confused her, because quite honestly she thought that she going out with James was only marginally less probable than her going out with Anko. She did not think it would be particularly polite to say so, however, so she plunged on to the second part of his statement. "Oh really? You have a list? How many people are on that list?" He was probably just kidding about her being on the list, right? Right? Though his next statement was about being alone with her 'at last' which reinforced the 'oh my god what is wrong with this boy?' thoughts.
The mention of food, however, reminded her of how hungry she was. "Well, maybe we could go there together," she suggested, ignoring the eyebrow waggling. "I...tend to get lost in unfamiliar places at Hogwarts." Her memorized map of it had not helped at all, and Ari had an absolutely awful sense of direction, which was why James would really be very, very helpful. Though she was not sure about where this conversation was going, or how awkward it could become.
