It was early morning, the sun was shining a perfect ray of chilly warmth. But no student would be outside, because there were much more important things to attend to. The most recognized to any teenager and most of Hogwarts being that breakfast was being served. Hogwarts had many talents, but among the least appreciated and most amazing had to be the food. Cooked completely by house elves, and practically a feast three times a day, Astrid was among the majority of Hogwarts who did not appreciate it. In fact, she rarely showed up to breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
How else would the thin, pretty, and well known witch keep herself in shape? It would be quite a scandal if she put on a few pounds and because she would never (god forbid) exercise, this was the standard way in which she was maintained. Today, she was not thinking about the calories or the fat or anything else. She had shown up for an equally vain reason, but almost unrelated to her weight. She needed to be kept in the loop. And it seemed that a new addition to the loop had been formed. A Slytherin named Cassandra Murphy.
Astrid had already met Cassandra's acquaintance and almost thought of the innocent and precious girl as a friend. But like all Elkjaers, she wasn't that trusting. In fact, once her rather fun night introducing Cassandra to what it meant to be a Slytherin, she had had second thoughts. Of course, she was constantly surrounded by lies, so it wasn't that particular that these feelings crept up on her.
Now, she was sitting at the Slytherin table, stirring coffee with one of those tiny straw things she didn't know the name for. It had been approximately a week since she talked to her new friend Cassandra, but she thought she may be able to catch her here at The Great Hall. What she wanted from Cassandra, wasn't anything shady. She only wanted to inquire what Cassandra had been up to the last week, she had heard things here and there. But Astrid wasn't one for rumors.
With a sudden snap, she saw Cassandra walk into the Great Hall and she waved at her fellow Slytherin, motioned for her to sit near, and said "Cassandra! I haven't seen you in forever! How have you been?"

So many nights were spent sleeping in the common room. Her typical night was heading to bed around one in the morning and sleeping for as long as she could. Generally it ment waking up at three in the morning and hanging around her room or spending time getting some extra homework done. The poor girl that she was stuck rooming with must have hated Cassandra's scheduale but she tried to be quiet when she got up at three. This morning she managed to sleep until four am, which was impressive but the pour girl still had bag under her eyes from the lack of sleep.
So that ment cover up and cover up to hide the dark circles from peers and professors. If professors knew about how her sleeping habbis then they would be worried. She put on the make up and did her hair all nice and pretty to look like a proper Slytherin girl. Ever since meeting Astrid and Diana she was beginning to become that person that she wanted to be and it was nice to have decent friends or at least girls that were pretending. But she was hoping to impress them enough that they actually considered her a friend.
Once she was dressed and it was breakfast time she headed down to the Great hall. They served coffee and that was all she wanted in the morning but she would take a piece of toast for between her first and second class. Right when she walked in though she heard her name and saw Astrid. So of course she went over and sat down at the able with her. "Morning Astrid. Yeah it has been a while. I've been pretty good... And how are you today?" She asked. Then she poured herself a nice warm cup of coffee since that is why she was down there. There must have been a reason why Astrid was down at breakfast. She wondered if maybe Astrid knew something and she wanted to talk to her about it. Hopefully it was not about her.

As Ms. Murphy came closer, Astrid thought that maybe she was being a little rash. Cassandra was innocent, she was a good person, and she was a good friend. So why was she thinking that maybe Cassandra wasn't really a friend? Well it could be because it was super weird that Cassandra was a Slytherin and also super sweet. Astrid was thinking that it strange, since when did Slytherin attract shy, studying, sweet people? Although this wasn't exactly a reason to not like a person, it was awful suspicious.
This thought was interrupted with Cassandra's answer. Just as cheery as Astrid, she made the same small talk. Which was kind of not the point of this meeting. Which is why Astrid didn't answer Cassandra's polite question. "Pretty good, eh? Hope Diana and I haven't been too influencing." She stopped to giggle for a second, then continued. "You don't have a boyfriend yet, do you?"
A sip of her coffee was taken, and the dark liquid felt hot against her lips. She liked it best, burning the inside of her mouth. Although her tongue would probably be peeling later because of it, and that was pretty disguising. Cassandra sat next to her, and Astrid hoped she wasn't going to order food.
It was true that food made her really uncomfortable. She didn't really like being around lots of food, and she didn't like talking to people while they ate (because it seemed like very few were mastered in the art of keeping your mouth closed while you chew). Maybe that was just Slytherins, the rotten apples of the four houses, weren't they?
Which led her back to her original question, what was up with Cassandra? What was she hiding that got her into this house? Although Astrid didn't usually go digging for her fellow housemates secrets, she was sure that it was safer she knew, then Diana did. Or one of the teachers. Plus, she really wanted to know. And if Cassandra wanted to actually have her trust, she was probably going to have to tell her something. At this point, she could probably be turned against Cassandra easily. Which when she thought about it, was horribly true. And she was a terrible person for being so disloyal, an willing to turn against her fellow slytherin for a bigger bargain.

Cassandra reached over and got herself a nice big cup of coffee and added just a splash of cream and sugar. She did it more for flavor, although she did drink black coffee often as well. Unlike most people at this school Cassandra knew about the house elves and appriciated them. All it really took was a thank you and this food tastes great. Thats all they wanted to hear. At nights when she would go down there they would serve her with smiles when she got coffee. Her grandmother had a house elf that Cassandra watched working hard in the kitchen last christmas. They really were hard workers and it was amazing.
Normally she would reach for a piece or two of the toast but from what she gathered about Astrid and Diana was that they never really ate. So for a moment she thought about it and decided to grab it when she went to leave later for class. That way they did not have to talk about eating or anything like that. But coffee was good enough in the morning and who could eat when they had just woken up.
Then she laughed at the bad influence comment. But as she smiled and watched Astrid she heard the question that she did not want to answer. Quickly she glanced around the table to see who else was there. "Why would you ask about a boyfriend?" She asked out of curiosity. Maybe Astrid saw her when she was on her date... that could be bad. But now she had to decide if she trusted Astrid enough to tell her. She did not believe that Astrid would run around and tell everyone like Diana would and she was trying to be more friendly towards the girls in her house.
Truth be told Cassandra had been trying to figure out why she had been placed in Slytherin from the moment that it happened. The values of the house were ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness. She definately had ambition since she worked so hard to keep up the act that she was a pureblood by having the best grades in her year for their house. Not so much cunning in her but she was slowly starting to see how she was becomming cunning. If she was given the chance to be a leader then Cassandra would ahve no problem taking over and showing everyone how to do it correctly. And every great leader had to be resourceful. The sorting hat saw something that everyone else was missing.

As Cassandra stirred her coffee, Astrid waved to a Ravenclaw boy behind her which she had been flirting with the night before. She wasn't quite sure what his name was but she also didn't really care. She wondered if any rumors about them were stirring, waving in the Great Hall was enough for the nasty girls in that building to build off of. And in this case, she hadn't even done anything with the boy. Although she wouldn't mind getting a few kisses from him.
Her daydreaming was interrupted by Cassandra, answering a question with a question. Although Astrid wasn't really connected to her daydreams, she snorted as she thought about how stupid it was to disrupt her inner dialogue with an answer that didn't really answer anything. Something in the way Cassandra asked why she wanted to know made her think that Cassandra did have a love interest.
She was itching to know, "Oh come on, we're friends now. Tell me about your boys!" She giggled slightly and her voice raised as she spoke. She wondered if Cassandra was going to give in and tell or if she had come all this way for nothing. As she was waiting for a response, she placed another sugar cube into her coffee and watched it melt.
Deciding to edge Cassandra on further, so that she would give in and tell her she began to guess. "Well is he in Slytherin?" She poked at Cassandra, thinking all the while that it was doubtful she had a crush on a Slytherin, being that she was the worst excuse for a Slytherin out there. Maybe it was more likely that she was interested in a Gryffindor, all that loyalty and bravery stuff might interest her friend. "Wait, wait. Let me try again. mmmhm Gryffindor!" She mimicked the leathery voice of the sorting hat and saw a student from across the way give her a strange look only to realize he thought she was calling him. He of course had been sitting at the Gryffindor table and enjoying some sort of breakfast.

She sipped on the coffee and tried to look more alert for her first class. It was a boring class to start with but at least she got it over with and she always brought a cup of coffee with her to help. It was one of those required classes but those were coming to a close because next year she got to pick more electives for her NEWTS. But she pulled her mind back and away from school to the subject at hand.
Was her friendship with Astrid strong enough for her to believe that she would not tell Diana and then it would not get around the school? Part of her wanted to believe it was and that her and Astrid were becoming better friends but trust was hard to find in the Slytherin House. Then Astrid tried to guess which house he belonged too. So it was time to give in and jsut tell her. Cassandra smiled and looked down at her cup of coffee. "Hufflepuff." She admitted. "Fifth year like me... taller and has blonde hair." She added to give Astrid sort of a visual on who it was.
She hoped that it was not a mistake telling her about the dates she had been on with Kenny. Then she realized that she had never been clear that it was just a few dates so she needed to fix that now. "We've only been on a few dates and I am still trying to decide what I think of him." She explained as she looked back at Astrid. Now she just looked stupid trying to explain herself. How did some girls just always look so sure of themselves? Cassandra ended up looking like a rambling idiot at least she thought that of herself.
To calm herself she took another long sip of her coffee and then poured herself some more. It was normal for her to have at least three cups of coffee before lunch and then at least three or more cups of tea and or coffee in the afternoon. It was a habbitt that she did not plan on breaking any time soon. "Can I ask you something Astrid.. ." She began and turned back towards her to speak. "I am not an idiot so I know that Diana is probably just using me in some way to get something or make herself look better. But are we really friends or at least becoming friends?" She asked. Cassandra could accept if she was jsut being used for things since she was in a way using them, but she really wanted to look beyond that and develop a some what good friendship with people in her house.

Astrid could see it in Cassandra's eyes, she was debating whether to let it all out and confine in her or not. Astrid sure hoped she did, as long as it didn't get all touchy feely. She wanted to know something that Diana didn't and she wanted to be the first friend Cassandra would come for everything. It was strange wanting these things from Cassandra, but getting them would give her another person to fall back on and to have fun with and to trust 10% of the time.
Cassandra began describing the boy. Astrid doubted she would know him because he was a fifth year, although from the way she described him, she guessed that Cassandra was not dating down. Although she was a little skeptical that Cassandra was into a Hufflepuff, did that mean all her Hufflepuff jokes would have to stop? They were like the lowest house on the totem pole. Full of people who enjoyed rainbows and chocolate bars. As this all ran through Astrid's head, she actually thought that maybe a Hufflepuff would be a good match for Cassandra, being she was like the goodest person in Slytherin.
Cassandra snapped back and cleared up that the two lovebirds had only been on a few dates and implied that the relationship was no big deal. Astrid hadn't exactly been planning their wedding but nodded along. It seemed like Cassandra wasn't exactly sure about the relationship, which Astrid thought was incredibly dangerous. And not to brag, but she would kind of know, she had been in her spare of crazy and one-sided relationships.
"So this boy, has he asked you to go steady or be his girlfriend or whatever?" Astrid wanted to make sure that the boy felt as giggly and pathetically unsure about the relationship as Cassandra, she didn't want her friend to be taken advantage of. Mostly because, she was going to have to sweep up the pieces. Cassandra began to ask her a question.
And then it came, the smart Cassandra that had an idea about what was going on with the girl's friendship. She asked if the two girls were becoming friends, and it made Astrid flinch. Friends? She didn't like having a lot of people who actually used the word friends to describe the relationship with her. Maybe allies, or partners in crime. She wasn't quite sure what it was about the word friends, but she just couldn't say yes to it truthfully. That's why she lied. "Friends? I think we are. Oh I didn't realize you didn't like Diana. What did she do?" She changed the subject quickly, hoping that Cassandra wouldn't realize she didn't want to talk about it.

It felt nice to tell someone, like it had felt nice when she told Kenny that she was a halfblood. She felt more relaxed after she said it because now she could talk to someone about how it was going and what she was feeling or if worse came to worse she would ahve someone to bitch with if the relationship went sour. Then she remembered that Kenny might be mad at her since she told but if Astrid told no one then Kenny would never find out.
She shook her head. "No... we've been on a date and thats really about it." She said. Secretly she hoped that she would never be one of those girls who ran to friends and cried for hours about it. Cassandra liked to think of herself as a strong independent women and if the relationship did not move on then no need to cry about it. Part of her figured Kenny was not the one but he was still nice. "I am not sure if he is really even into me since he is so quiet and does not show like any emotions."
The fact is that she did not want to get screwed over by these girls that were calling her a friend. In a way it was her covering her ass. After all everyone knew how Slytherin could be when they really wanted something. "its not that I dont like Diana... I just know her reputation in the house. And up until now I was not noticed in the house and it is quite rare to see the popular people becoming friends with the shy girl." She explained.
This was probably not the smartest thing for her to be doing. She looked down at the cup of coffee and watched the ripples appear and travel through the mug as she stired the coffee with her spoon to mix the sugar better. "I just dont want to get fucked over in the end." She added and then forced herself to smile. "But this talk is just too depressing for the morning so lets forget I said anything."
Quickly she checked the clock to see how much time there was before class started and there was plenty of time for another cup of coffee. So she finished her current cup and poured another. "So Astrid... are you seeing anyone?" It was a question worth asking since she had just been asked that question. Plus it was a way to get to know Astrid a little better.

The subject did change again, Cassandra hadn't noticed the anticipation of this change and the relief was clear across Astrid's face. Once again Cassandra was talking about her little Hufflepuff not-boyfriend. She quickly explained that the two had only been on one date, it was not the words that caught Astrid's attention but the tone of her voice. She sounded unsure. As if she didn't know what she thought of him, or maybe she didn't know if he was really her boyfriend. Astrid had half a mind to ask, but decided to keep this thought for later. Cassandra continued her explanation. It was Astrid's first real look at the boy's personality and she wasn't sure if she approved. It was confirmed that Cassandra was unsure if he really liked her or not, the earlier fear became larger in Astrid's eyes.
She had been in plenty of relationships with little communication and knew that most of the time it was not for the best. Emotions became tangled and everything was unsure. Always in the end, someone got hurt. Now with Astrid's case, it was seldom herself but she was not sure about Cassandra. Was Cassandra the type to lay down and cry about a boy? She certainly didn't want to be the one stuck comforting her. Oh no, comforting definitely wasn't her strong point and definitely not her idea of a good night. She quickly made another rash decision. "So does this boy have a name?" She was playing it cool, but inside was planning how to confront this boy and make sure that he was not planning on breaking Cassandra's heart.
How was she going to do it? She didn't quite know, she did know that she was going to have to challenge him stealthily and without it getting back to Cassandra. She thought about it a little and decided that it wouldn't require this much thought. It couldn't be that hard to trick a fifth year Hufflepuff after all.
Cassandra began to cover up her comment about Diana Black, a good strategy seeing that Diana was the kind of girl that could ruin a person and had ruined several. It was the way that Cassandra said it that made Astrid literarily squirm in her seat. She was judging Diana on her reputation, something that Astrid herself hated. She hated people who judged herself because of her own reputation. And although she was about to perk up with a smart-alecky comment, the conversation was changed too quickly. She let her own displeasure sizzle down inside of her. There was no reason to be particularly mad at Cassandra because she didn't know about the loathing she held. But she would forget this comment, and maybe one day she would use it against her.
Cassandra asked a final question, was Astrid seeing anyone? The answer was of course, no, yes, many, but none serious. She wasn't quite sure how to put that in words. "Well, kind of. Just a couple here and there who have caught my interest." She smiled sweetly as Cassandra and waited for another question or for the conversation to turn back to her. She looked over at a couple of students getting ready to leave the Great Hall and realized that classes would be starting soon.

The only thing she did not really like about thier relationship was that it felt like she was acting as the man in the relationship in a way. But in her mind it would probably never last since they were so young. Young relationships never lasted past a year at least that is what she gathered when she would listen to people. Cassandra had a feeling that she would end up just alone for a while after Hogwarts. Probably marry a bit later in life unlike the Slytherin Purebloods. She knew that purebloods married younger because of arranged marriages.
Would her grandmother do an arranged marriage for Cassandra? If her father was not in the picture then yes, but her father was in the picture. He would put his foot down and allow Cassandra to marry whoever. She had no idea how she would react if thier was to be a break up. Probably keep to herself and just spend some time alone in the room. She never saw herself as the kind that would go running to other when she was in pain and Astrid definately did not look like the kind of girl that wanted that.
"his name is Kenny." She replied and played with the coffee cup. It was probably stupid of her to say anything about Diana but it was a fear she had. She was scared that she would end up at the center of some diana drama and be the one who got in trouble. It was probably best not to toy with Diana or Astrid since in a way it was like playing with fire. Fire would eventually burn her but for now it was just best to relax and let it go.
She was curious to see if Astrid was seeing someone since she knew that Diana was sleeping with a few men right now, specifically a ravenclaw. "Anyone stand out?" She asked to see if many she could get a house that the boy was in from Astrid. She doubted it but it was worth a try. Then she finished her current cup of coffee and glanced around to see how many people where left before class. It was getting close to time to grabbing her toast and getting off to class.
