The sounds of quills scratching filled her eyes as Riley as well begin to write in her quick scrawl, readable, but not super neat. She was about speed, not perfection, although she certainly enjoyed that as much as the next person. Putting down her quill as Professor Ataman began speaking, she smiled at the cat that came from her wand. Patronus'. All the 6th years had learned that last year, and she was happy for the chance to try again.
Last year, the hardest part of this had been choosing a happy memory. She didn't have many very happy memories, so she had too think way back, until she finally found it. Her 6th birthday, blowing out her candles, her little sister at her side, parent's singing and laughing, everyone smiling. It was one of the only pictures in her head where her whole family was happy, or really any of her family happy.
Standing, a small line appeared over her nose as she concentrated. Moving her wand, she said clearly, focusing on her memory, "Expecto Patronum." A fairly despite wisp appeared. Taking a breath, she waved her wand again, "Expecto Patronum!" She said again, this time remembering the laughter of her family. Her horse came galloping out, and she grinned widely. She'd never gotten it so quickly before. Normally it took her three or more try's. She was quite obviously proud of herself, the memory of her family's laughter still rolling in her head, just increasing her happiness. She was very careful not to let herself focus too hard on her sister, who now hated her, or her father, who betrayed her. She focused on her mother. She never wanted to leave Riley, but she hadn't had a choice, and that was what kept Riley going. Her memories of her mother.

At least he wasn't too late. He then listened as the professor started the lesson by explaining that they will have to try and perform a patronus today. That was extremely exciting. He had always wanted to try this and now was his chance. He had no idea what his patronus could be but there was no doubt he will be ecstatic once he saw it. He knew it was a tough spell to master or even perform, but he was so determined to do it that he convinced himself it wouldn't be as hard as everyone made it seem.
He watched as the professor cast her spell. Her patronus turned out to be a tabby cat and he watched as it walked around her feet. That was so sick. He couldn't wait to try it out. She then told the class it was their turn and to try it out. This was it! He made a mental note that the words were Expecto Patronum and he had to say them clear and powerfully in order for them to work. He took out his wand and faced the side of the class where he could concentrate a little more. He didn't want an audience of people watching him try especially if it turns out that he failed. He held his wand firmly, cleared his mind and then said "Expect Patronum". He noticed a small white gleam come out of his wand but that was it.
He was devastated. He wanted it to work the first time he tried though he knew deep down it wouldn't. He needed to get this before the end of class. He hated not completing something or being able to do it. He looked around and noticed most students were having the same problem. He cleared his mind again and leaned into his spell, "Expecto Patronum". This time the light grew a bit brighter and he was happy with that. At least he was getting a bit better at it. He wasn't sure what he was doing wrong though. He was clearly missing something. What could it be? This light still was only a tiny fragment of what this spell was capable of.
He sighed and continued to practice a couple more times to no avail. There were a couple of times when he got absolutely nothing to happen. Then there were the couple of times when there was some light. That's about it. He never got to the point where an animal shot out. He continued practicing until the teacher gave the class more direction. He was determined to get this.

[/IMG] Thelma was shocked that kids actually got the spell. It wasn’t that she thought they couldn’t do it; it was just that it was such an advanced spell and a number of students had gotten it so quickly. Honestly Thelma hadn’t really been looking; she had been sitting at her desk drinking a cup of coffee, for about thirty minutes, while her students practiced. When she started to see silver animals dancing around the room, she decided it was time to intervene. “Very nice, very very nice. Good job to everyone who got it.” Sitting up a little straighter in her chair, “and to those of you who didn’t get it, or got a few bursts of random silver, good job also. Just keep practicing, and you will get it soon.
Thelma looked up at the clock, and was in awe. There were only about five minutes reaming of the class period. “Time flies when you’re having fun, right?” Thelma stood up from her chair. “Go ahead and pack up.” Thelma gave her students about three minutes to pack up, while she stood and thought about how well the year was going to go, if he kid were already that adept to the subject.
“Since this is the first lesson, you have no homework.” Thelma listened to a few kids cheer. “I’m extremely proud of how well everyone did today, and hope you keep it up for the rest of the year.” Clearing her throat, “I know I said no homework, but if you guys could practice the patrons charm maybe once or twice, and show it to me next lesson, I would be tempted to give out house points.” With that and a small smile the bell sounded. “You’re free to go have a nice day.” Thelma loved teaching and everything about it.
