TELL ME THAT YOU'VE GOT EVERYTHING YOU WANT&& Y O U R B I R D C A N S I N GBUT YOU DON'T GET ME, YOU DON'T GET ME
Arianne was ill.
It was not a serious illness. It was pretty minor, a cold and a cough that she thought she had caught because the weather was starting to get a little chilly, and it was not exactly a cause for concern. In fact, it was of such little concern that the school nurse had told her that she would get over it soon, especially since there was some sort of epidemic starting among the younger students and she was much more concerned about that than about Arianne, who after all was 15 and not about to die of a simple cold. And even she had not really bothered about it for the first day or two, but after the third day, she knew that something absolutely had to be done. So, she'd decided to take the first holiday that came her way to deal with it.
It was not so much the fact that it was a disease. It was the fact that Arianne, who wouldnt even keep her hair undone because it would come on her face and disturb her, just couldnt bear the annoyance of constantly sniffling and sneezing and coughing. It was distracting, she couldnt read properly, she couldnt concentrate on anything, and she was petrified of spreading germs, even though she always carried around a handkerchief and was always quick to use it, and even though she was avoiding actually getting too close to anyone to prevent them from catching her disease. Still, all this was taking a toll on her and affecting her studies, so she had decided that it was time that she did something to fix this. If the nurse wouldnt do anything about her cold, Arianne would just fix it herself. How hard could it possibly be?
As it turned out, it was much harder than it seemed.Oh the potion for curing the cough was simple enough, they'd learned it way back in her third year and she'd first practiced it when she was in her second year. But the tricky part was making it while her nose was all runny and she was sneezing every two minutes, and she kept on coughing. She'd gathered all the ingredients in the empty classroom that she'd never seen anyone use except during exams when people (including her) used it to practice various spells. The last time she'd made a potion here was last year, when she'd made the Draught of Living Death five times in an attempt to get it perfect. It had taken a lot of work to finally make it that way.
This year, however, she planned to get it at her first try. She lit a small fire with her wand, taking care to make sure it was all in an enclosed area, and put her cauldron over it. The water already inside started bubbling merrily. She opened her potions book to the correct place and placed the ingredients in a neat row just parallel to the book, and started to work on her potion. She soon added some shriveled roots of the gurbytang to it, and then some beatles eyes. She stopped to cough into her handkerchief as she stirred the potions thrice clockwise, and realized that she'd messed up a bit and stirred too fast. She resolved to pay more attention, but it was hard because some of the ingredients were making her sneeze even more.

Riley was good at charms. Sure, she was pretty decent at all her classes, but charms was obviously her best, that was for sure. Transfiguration... now that was a hard one. She just never seemed to be able to get whatever she was trying to do quite right! Professor had assured her, she was doing fine, Transfiguration was a very hard type of magic, but that had not suited Riley. She had become quite determined. Thus, that was why she was dancing down the hall, heading towards an empty classroom she had discovered in her second year. It was perfect for this kind of thing, somewhere you could go and practice without any interruptions. Slowly pushing the door open, looking left and right, sure she wasn't supposed to be here, especially since she was skipping Astronomy for this. She almost giggled at the thought. That was the worst class... ever. It was all lies! There was nothing worse then lying, in Riley's opinion. She paused when she heard someone coughing inside, and she carefully pulled open the door, stepping lithely inside. She closed it behind her, and a smile grew on her pink lips, " Hello." She said abruptly, still leaning against the now closed door. Noticing the potion the girl was working on, she quickly assumed she must be practicing for a class, "Your practicing, too? Oh--wait... are you making something for your cold? That would probably make more sense, wouldn't it?" She had been thinking aloud. Again. Thinking aloud was something Riley did often, she just found it easier to organize her thoughts when she was speaking them, laying on the table, so she could hear them and arrange them in order, something she wasn't capable of in her mind. After a moment, she realized she hadn't given her name, mind jumping from one topic to another faster then a bouncing ferret, "Oh, I'm Riley Saige! Gryffindor. Have I seen you around, you seem fairly familiar...?"Tagging; Outfit; School Robes Words; 326 Notes; Bouncing Ferret... Malfoy... ;D

She stirred it further, coughing a bit as the fumes hit her. How could it be so difficult to make a cough potion when you had a cough? Surely sometimes people must be making them for themselves. Though when she thought about it, there was absolutely no need for her to be making it on her own anyway. By all rights, the school nurse should have had some in stock and given it to her - if only so that she did not spread it to everyone to else. It was just that it was a substitute nurse and she was a little ineffective, not to mention lazy. Arianne hated laziness more than anything else. If you couldnt do it, she'd help you - but not being willing to do it? That made her angry.
"Hello."
Arianne had not expected anyone, least of all the strange voice from nowhere, and she unexpectedly dropped the roots that she was holding into the potion. She shook her head at her carelessness - it would mess up the potion to put so many. Sighing, she put in a pinch of powdered manticore to counteract the effect of the extra roots and turned back to the girl who had so unexpectedly talked to her. "Hi. I'm sorry. I was not expecting you." She coughed again. "Practicing too? Wait, you're here to practice? I wasnt aware this classroom was used for anything, am I disturbing?" Her voice sounded congested and she sounded tired, and she was.
"Yes, I am making something for this awful cough," she said to the girl who had started talking to her so randomly. The girl talked a little oddly, like she was talking to herself and not really to Arianne, and that confused her slightly, even though she maintained her composure and stayed polite - it was not like Arianne to get frazzled, even though her perplexedness was showing clearly on her extremely transparent face. She was confused by this strange girl, even though she did not seem like a bad person, as such.
"Hi, Riley. I'm Arianne, and I'm in Ravenclaw, Fifth year...maybe you saw me in class or library or something? Which year are you in?" she asked the girl, who had gone rather abruptly from one topic to another, making it hard for Arianne to keep up. She stopped and stared at her potion, which was now a deep red, when it should have been a lighter shade according to the book. "Could you pass me the nettle leaves please?" she asked the girl. "They're in that right corner, near you." It was not like Arianne to keep something so out of the way, but then her illness was weighing down on her. Still, she figured if the girl was there anyway, it did not hurt to take her help. She seemed nice enough, if a little bizarre.

The first thing Riley picked up was that the girl was so obviously sick. She sounded tired, and from the way Riley easily shocked her (causing her to drop something into the potion), she picked up she must be a bit out of it because of her sickness. "Hi. I'm sorry. I was not expecting you. Practicing too? Wait, you're here to practice? I wasn't aware this classroom was used for anything, am I disturbing?" Riley shook her head, raising her eyebrows and giving a half smile-- green gray eyes peering at the girl curiously. It seemed her first impression hadn't been the greatest, that the girl perhaps thought Riley was a bit odd, not that she minded. However, that wasn't what Riley was thinking. She was saying exactly what she was thinking, "Oh, no. I just use it for extra spell practice on occasion, that's all. I've never seen anyone else in here, you see." She frowned shortly at this. She didn't mean like this classroom was only her practice spot. She just meant she had thought she would find it empty. She didn't want to intrude. "Yes, I am making something for this awful cough," As before, she seemed perplexed at Riley's manner, but that was better then angered or annoyed, of course, as Riley sometimes got in return for just being herself. She nodded in response, thoughts whirring a mile per hour, analyzing and overanalyzing everyone, and even sometimes under-analyzing. "Hi, Riley. I'm Arianne, and I'm in Ravenclaw, Fifth year...maybe you saw me in class or library or something? Which year are you in?" The girl's words shocked her out of her mind, and she shook her head once, sharply, as if trying to get a rather pesky fly to leave her be. Then, smiling once more, she responded lightly in her soprano voice, "Oh, I'm 6th year." Then in hearing her next comment, she bounces over, picking up the leaves, and bouncing back, holding them out to her, "Here you go!" She says, maybe a bit too perkily. TELL ME THAT YOU'VE GOT EVERYTHING YOU WANT&& Y O U R B I R D C A N S I N GBUT YOU DON'T GET ME, YOU DON'T GET ME
The next part of the potions ingredients said that she had to turn it clockwise thrice. She did that slowly and effectively, though she had a feeling that she was a little off on the timing and it might go better if she'd done four quicker turns, but she ignored the feeling. The book was much more likely to be correct than her, and she was tired of being ill and she did not want things to be any more messed up than they already were. The last thing she needed right then was for there to be an explosion or something, leading to more chaos or confusion. That was something that had recently happened to a first year, as a slytherin had told her some time ago.
"Oh, no. I just use it for extra spell practice on occasion, that's all. I've never seen anyone else in here, you see."
The strange girl was starting to make her feel somewhat guilty. She figured she should have booked the room or something, and had just neglected it because the room was just always empty. "Oh well, I am really sorry for disturbing your practice. I shouldnt be too long, actually. I'm here for almost the same reason as you - I just assumed it would be empty." She saw the girl frown, and misinterpreted it - Arianne was quite likely to do that because she was awful at reading people - as awful as she was at hiding her own emotions. "Oh, would you like me to take this somewhere else? I can do that." It would set her back an hour, but she really didnt want to disturb the girl's practice, she knew how annoying it was when she had a practice planned and she couldnt finish it.
Soon enough, though, the girl looked cheery again, which Arianne took as a good sign - though she was almost a little too cheery for the calm and composed Ravenclaw. Arianne sneezed carefully for a moment into her handkerchief, and then looked again into her potions book and added the nettle leaves. It turned the right shade of blue - or if not, it was off by only about a shade or two, which she took as a good sign. She liked accuracy but she was just too tired just then to be extremely accurate. She'd spent all night in Prefect duty patrolling and she'd had a ton of homework too, on top of which being ill was quite a bit of strain.
The girl revealed that she was a sixth year, to which Arianne nodded. That explained why she was not all that familiar to Arianne, who was usually good at remembering faces, besides, the girl had an amazing set of eyes and red hair that she was sure she wouldnt forget if she was in her grade, at least. It didnt explain how she was familiar to the girl though. "Well, that rules out the 'I saw you in class theory'," she said with a smile. "Though actually not - it could have been a combined class, they've been doing those a lot lately." She did not say that mostly 5th and 6th years were in different groups - the 3rd, 4th and 5th together and 6th and 7th together. "What classes are you in? And which practice am I interrupting?" She still felt sort of bad about doing that, though the girl hadnt said anything further.

Seeing the guiltiness in Arianne's eyes quickly turned Riley's smile quickly back into a frown. "Oh well, I am really sorry for disturbing your practice. I shouldn't be too long, actually. I'm here for almost the same reason as you - I just assumed it would be empty."The guiltiness really made sense now, and that turned Riley's own eyes guilty, and she responded quickly, almost cutting off the girls next statement, Oh, no, no, please don't! I didn't mean it like that! I just meant-- well, I don't know what I meant, but it isn't that! She says, resolutely, frown deepening, an unpleasant line developing just above her nose. When Arianne continues on to speak about classes, Riley nods, not paying the best of attention. Her attention often drifted during these kind of small-talk conversations, nothing personal about it, so as soon as she was sure that the girl had it straight that Riley hadn't meant anything by her previous conversation, her mind began to wander... where too, you ask? well no one can be sure. Perhaps to the land of flying nargles. "What classes are you in? And which practice am I interrupting?" This question brings Riley's attention to the front of her mind once more, and she locks the door behind her, so she can't wander down the endless halls of thoughts and memories again. However, she also realizes that the girl still must think she had interrupted Riley, which was just silly. "Oh, I interrupted you, not the other way around. I'm in Charms, DADA, Transfiguration, and.... Runes, I think. And Astronomy, unfortunately. I was going to practice Transfiguration, but you didn't interrupt me, it was the other way around." She's so caught up in her mindless rambling, she doesn't notice she repeated herself. Same old Riley, other then the fact she was still frowning to herself. Arianne found it really hard to concentrate on two things at a time. That was why she ignored the one that she found marginally less important - the conversation, for moments in the middle as she added a few more ingredients, did a few more turns, and followed the instructions further. The potion really did seem longer than normal. It was complicated only because it was lengthy and because she had to keep stopping in the middle to refer to the instructions - Arianne liked to memorize where she could and only keep checking every few steps - though she didnt have the time or energy to do it this time. It was enough work to just keep on her feet and keep stirring the potion, which was now a deep purple.
"Oh, no, no, please don't! I didn't mean it like that! I just meant-- well, I don't know what I meant, but it isn't that!"
The girl was still frowning, which was probably not a good sign, in fact, her frown had deepened. Arianne frowned too, looking sad and apologetic. This was somewhat alleivated when the girl said that she was the one who had interrupted. "Well, I'm sorry if you booked the room of something, I didnt think to check." It was probably a mistake on her part. She looked up as the girl recited her list of classes. "Yes, well, I'm in all of those. I have to practice some transfiguration too, its one of my worst classes." As far as theory was concerned, Arianne was excellent at Transfiguration and just about anything else - but practically with a wand she wasnt good at anything, and she was awful at Transfiguration, requiring hours and hours of additional practice just to stay with the class.
A moment later, Arianne returned back to her potion, though this time she continued the conversation with Riley. "I suppose you had the Patronus charm last year? We're learning it now, and its a bit tough." Arianne had no trouble sharing all this with someone she did not know, she was mostly up-front about revealing her concerns to everyone, very honest, and besides this girl didnt seem so bad. In fact, despite the fact that she repeated herself and was frowning and still seemed a little upset at Arianne, Arianne was starting to like the gryffindor. She found it easy enough to like people, and to show that she liked them, which she mostly did by sharing her concerns with them.
In a moment, though, everything exploded. And that was quite literal. She had just been trying to stir it a little too vigorously to make sure it turned the exact shade of magenta the book described. Arianne could not bear that things be anything less than perfect in the end, and she'd thought that stirring it a bit was the right solution, but unfortunately she'd ended up knocking a whole jar of ingredients right into the potion - leading to an amazing explosion that led to the potions being splattered all around the room. She surveyed the mess for a very, very long moment - she had thankfully not been injured and she was praying the other girl was not either, before saying, "Oh my god."

Well, I'm sorry if you booked the room of something, I didnt think to check." Riley just looked confused now. Then, she burst out laughing, "Oh, no, no, I don't even think you can book the room! I just didn't know anyone else even knew this was here! Hogwarts is so big, I'm always learning." She grinned here. This was one thing she loved about Hogwarts, it was always so easy to loose yourself, find yourself somewhere new, doing something you'd never dreamed off. It was so different from her foster home. Foster house. That place was not Riley's home, and it never would be. She hated it. Pushing away the self-pitying frown that had formed on her lips, her carefree smile placed back on, she just nodded, as she had missed what the girl had said, and normally nodding could get you out of anything; something she'd learned over the years. "I suppose you had the Patronus charm last year? We're learning it now, and its a bit tough." She did, however, hear this part, and nodded slowly. It had taken her awhile to get this particular spell. She couldn't think of a happy moment. She had finally chosen he third birthday, making her birthday cake with her mom and sister, and her father had came home from work, and they all sang happy birthday for riley. Smiling still, but softer, she answered, "Yeah, I got it. It's really hard. Mine's a horse." That's when it exploded. She hadn't been expecting it. If she had been watching the girl, she might have known, the potion she was doing was fairly simple. Arianne seemed smart, so Riley guessed it must've been a fluke, she was sick after all. Luckily, she seemed unharmed from the explosion, as did Riley, "Oh, my goodness. Are you all right?!" She asks Arianne, worriedly, concern seeping through her eyes. "Oh, no, no, I don't even think you can book the room! I just didn't know anyone else even knew this was here! Hogwarts is so big, I'm always learning."
"That's true," she said with a knowing smile. She grinned. "A few days ago I was patrolling around and I was trying to read at the same time and I ran into this wall by mistake, only I didnt actually run into the wall, I went through it and ended up, weirdely enough, right outside my common room. Its like it knew where I wanted to be." It probably did, too. She'd been at Hogwarts long enough to know that the building could do some truly weird things. She'd memorized a map of the school in her first year, but had discovered it was absolutely useless - there were a hundred things that should've been there and werent - and a hundred other things that kept shifting around - and even more things that she probably didnt even know about yet. One day, she would try to make a truly accurate, fully moving map of Hogwarts - if that was even possible.
She smiled at the next statement. "Oh, a horse sounds good. What do you think it symbolizes?" Now this was a rather deep, probing question that Arianne probably shouldnt have asked someone she barely knew - but if you could explain that to Arianne then you were completely great, because she simply didnt understand such things at times. She paused for a moment to wonder what hers could be - if she ever got it right, that is, because she'd tried it about 47 times (well, alright, she'd counted) and had only managed a wisp of smoke (she'd reached reasonable accuracy for that - she was averaging 9 times out of 10 by the time she'd finished up) but she'd come nowhere even close to have a corporal patronus. She had just been about to ask Riley what kind of memory was appropriate, when the whole thing exploded and of course things became somewhat unimportant.
For a moment, all she could do was to just stand there. She'd been smiling just half a day ago at the first year who'd exploded their potion and now she was actually doing it herself? She couldnt believe it. She could hear Riley's voice in the background, asking if she was alright, but she ignored it for a moment - it was impossible to concentrate while there was such an amazing mess in front of her. Arianne was about to conjure up a mop to use, when she realized that that was not exactly necessary - and she waved her wand. She did not manage it in one step as her mother usually did, but she did manage it in a few, and by the time everything was aligning itself neatly again, she had almost calmed down.
That was when she finally turned to her companion. "I'm so sorry about that," she said, sounding shaken, which she was. "I'm fine. Are you okay? It didnt splash you, did it?" If it had, it might have caused a minor burn - but Arianne, thankfully, had escaped all harm because she'd already been moving in the opposite direction. She hoped Riley was far enough away to not be in any danger, she would have hated it if she had ended up hurting the girl. She looked again at the row of ingredients, and the clean cauldron. Well, perhaps it was time to get back to work.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We're JustMisguided Ghosts Traveling Endlessly Riley never managed to get in her answer to any of this, before the explosion, and when it soon became apparent that Arianne would clean up before she even spoke to Riley, Riley waited patiently, not letting her mind wander no matter how greatly it wanted too. "No, I'm fine. Are you?" She asked, even though the girl looked fine. "You look fine, though, so I don't even know why I'm asking, well other then the whole cold thing." She said, pondering her words as she said them, saying them like she was thinking aloud (Which she was). Pausing, as she thought back to the girl's previous question, about her patronus.
She, too, had always wondered the meaning behind it, and the best she could up with was that Riley was a free spirit. She didn't feel free. She felt trapped by her past, her family, locked behind the iron cage that was herself. She didn't understand why everyone seemed to hate her. It shouldn't be because she's different. She wasn't really. She was unique; and everyone's unique. That's what made everyone so alike, which was a good thing, Riley thought.
Coming back to the present, and replacing the look on her face, like shattered glass, to her carefree smile, she said quickly, "Oh-uh, as for my horse, I don't know why. I have my theories, but..." She shrugs. She had felt as if she had said it was because Riley was a 'free spirit' she would feel like lying, which she wouldn't be able to stand. So, she avoided the question best she could. Riley was like that. At one minute, completely dishonest, her words unforgiving, the next, placing her words carefully on the table, hiding some behind others, so she wasn't lying, but wasn't telling the whole truth, either. It was a kind of deceit only possible with practice, and unknowingness.

"You look fine, though, so I don't even know why I'm asking, well other then the whole cold thing."
That was a confusing statement. "Well, I thought you looked fine too, but I thought I'd ask because..." she paused and frowned. "Well, because, its the polite thing to do." That was something a little unfamiliar to Arianne, she liked to be polite - it made it very clear what was the right thing to say in the right situation, and Arianne thought she was very good at knowing that. In truth, though, she was socially quite clueless and often blurted out whatever was on top of her mind, but she still thought of her politeness as an armour, almost. If she was polite and nice to people, they wouldnt want to hurt her, would she? And if she was polite, perhaps she could avoid hurting everyone else too. These two things mattered a great deal to Arianne - perhaps more than they ought to.
She nodded at the girl's statement about her horse. "Well, no one can ever be sure, right? I guess its the way you look at it. I wonder if patronuses can change as people change," she mused. She would have to look that up. Truth be told, even though Arianne found the Patronus Charm intensely frustrating - because she hadnt been able to go beyond a spark of light a few times - she did find it very, very interesting. A charm built on happy memories? A charm to prevent dementors, those who fed on fear (she'd looked them up after class) from affecting you - and a quick means of conversation? They would be an amazing spell to have up her sleeve.
In the meantime, she had started to light up her cauldron again - she had not, after all, lost her cold, which was proved by a few frantic sneezes one after the other. She paused for a moment, however, before she did the same. "Would you like me to go somewhere else and continue? If you want to practice, I mean?" Once again, Arianne was back to her politeness - how could she not be? She'd already got the girl in, prevented her from practicing, and then exploded her cauldron all around her - Arianne felt sure that if she was in the same situation as the other girl, she would definitely be quite annoyed just then. So she was quite ready to pack up and leave - in fact, she switched off the flame, and had started to pick up her book, when she was interrupted by a marvelous sneeze - though she did, thankfully, manage to get out her handkerchief in time.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We're JustMisguided Ghosts Traveling Endlessly Well, I thought you looked fine too, but I thought I'd ask because...Well, because, its the polite thing to do.
Riley's confused expression mirrored Arianne's, before clearing when she answered, starting slowly, "Well, sure, it's polite, but why ask if you don't really want to know. I mean, when people ask if your alright, most of the time they don't mean it. They just want to know if your okay enough that your not about to burst, and if you are, then say your fine, and walk away before you do burst," Her words were coming faster now, and she didn't notice that she wasn't making a huge amount of sense, "So you act like everythings okay when it's not, and when people ask you nod and fake a smile, and when someone asks about home you just brush off the subject like it's not importent... but... but..." Her face, that had been gaining color, lost all of it as her skin turned white, "Oh--uh, rambling." She said with a quick, pointed laugh, brushing back her hair awkwardly.
On the note about patrunuses, Riley shrugged. Her solitary yet sweet silver horse seemed to fit with her, and she doubted it would change. Well, it could, maybe, but not for a while, at least. Her thoughts then started wandering once more as the conversation drifted off into momentary silence, but when Arainne spoke again, Would you like me to go somewhere else and continue? If you want to practice, I mean?
