Now though, he was a changed man and all because on the first day of school he had been sorted into Gryffindor with a fellow muggle-born called Kadie Taylor. Since that day the two were almost inseparable (except maybe on some of his more dangerous stunts! But she'd always be there to tell him off afterwards). She was pretty much the one who stopped him accidentally killing himself whenever he left his dorm. And he loved her for that. It had never occurred to James that he was actually in love with his best friend, although many mutual friends suspected as much. Sure, her last boyfriend could do with having his head (or other body parts) shoved in a mince meat processor, but he had treated her badly. Any guy who treated any girl badly deserved as much. Sure, James knew Kadie was a pretty girl, probably the prettiest girl he knew, especially when her eyes lit up mischievously, but that didn't mean he was in love with her. In fact Kadie was probably the only girl in Hogwarts he hadn't considered trying it on with. He loved to flirt, and while they had their own flirty jokes, it was never serious. No, Kadie was into her long-term relationships with guys who deserved meat procesors and James was into flirting with random girls. That had always been how it worked and it worked just fine for them. Five years after their fateful meeting, James Rivers strode down the lawns of Hogwarts school, designer jeans, just a little faded and white t-shirt just visible under his zipped-up green hoodie. They had seperated earlier when she had some crazy clever person class like arithmancy or ancient runes or something like that and James had made her promise to meet him by the edge of the lake so they could go to the bonfire together. He dug his hands deeper into the denim pockets and watched the lights dazzle around the giant fire as he made his way towards the still, calm, black expanse of the lake. He couldn't see anyone yet but it was dark and he still had a couple of hundred yards to cover. Small puffs of breath hung in the air as he walked, it was only September so the weather was still pretty warms during the day, but at night the winter months were starting to make their inevitability known. Finally he made it to the water's edge and did a quick look left and right for his friend. He couldn't see her anywhere but knew she would be here soon. James took his hands out of his pockets, cupped them over his mouth and breathed deeply, trying to coax some warmth back into his finger-tips. His feet stomped the cold, damp ground, trying to get some blood flowing into his extremities. The bonfire was looking more inviting now than ever. After her last class was over, ancient runes, Kadie grabbed her bag and headed to the girls dormitory in the Gryffindor common room. She deposited her bag, and then started getting ready. She wasn't going to take forever getting ready since she knew James would probably be waiting for her. She put on her favorite pair of black jeans and a tan shirt that her mother had gotten her. She wasn't going to go heavy on the jewlry, but she put on her favorite black ring. She put some lip gloss on, but didn't bother with too much makeup because it would be night anyway and nobody would be able to tell if she had makeup or not after awhile. She put on her black boots, the ones her aunt Jasmine had got her for Christmas. Kadie liked to look good. But she wasn't out to impress anybody. She dressed good because of her mother. She'd inherited a sense of style and looking good from her. Her mother had forced her to model since she was six. Thank God, she'd gotten her letter from Hogwarts. That letter had saved her. She ran a brush through her hair, making sure it looked okay before making her way down to the black lake where she knew her best friend would be.
Ever since that first day when they'd been sorted into Gryffindor, they had become inseparable. He was the person she cared about more than anybody else on this earth. And he was probably the one person she would do anything for. Sure, there were girls in Gryffindor her age that she was close to, but James was her best friend. And it wasn't really all that weird having a guy for a best friend. Sometimes people wondered if she missed out on girl talk or whatever by having a guy for a best friend. But, Kadie didn't miss out on anything. She was open with James. She pretty much told him everything. He was the one person besides her parents of course that had known about her pregnancy, and about the whole Marcus situation. Sure, people at Hogwarts knew she'd been dating the guy, but that was about the extent of what they knew.
Besides, Kadie wasn't really into the giggly girl talk anyway. She never had been. She and James were different in many ways. Which was a good thing, because Kadie knew that he was good for her. He was much more social than she was, and he got her to go to things. She'd been apprehensive about coming to this bonfire, but she'd kind of been a stick in the mud since her pregnancy, not wanting to do anything during the summer. Well, except for go change her hair and get a tattoo and another piercing in both of her ears. She'd just wanted a major change after Marcus. It was like she'd just wanted to become a whole different person. But other then that, she hadn't wanted to do much of anything. So she wanted to make that up to him, considering he'd crashed on her sofa for part of that time. Be a good sport and go to this thing and all that. Besides, she knew that she would have fun. She may have grumbled about going places in the past, but when it came right down to it, she knew how to party and have a good time too.
Around James, she was completely herself. They were best friends. Partners in crime. James was always the one she was with when she did anything crazy. She definitely had Ravenclaw like attributes because of the studying hard thing. But she was crazy and a daredevil too, pretty much willing to try anything. Of course, some of his more crazy stunts she had sat out. But normally she was right there along with him. He was the one person she knew she wanted in her life even after Hogwarts. She couldn't imagine her life without him. So she was very glad that she'd got sorted into Gryffindor, and she knew there was a reason for that. She got along very well with those Ravenclaw girls that were her age, but they weren't James.
She walked down to the black lake, just looking for her taller best friend. She smiled as she spotted him, shaking her head at the sight of the green hoodie. Kadie didn't get cold very easily. She'd brought a jacket just in case, but she wasn't wearing it. She was just carrying it for now. "Hey you. Hope I didn't keep you waiting long,"she said with a smile as she reached him. She was actually really excited for this. It was a great way to start off the new year. She could already smell the barbeque, and the bonfire, whoever had thought it up had been genius.

Kadie couldn't help but laugh at James' words. But then, he had a way of making people laugh. As he gave her a bear hug, she hugged him back. She wasn't really touchy feely with anybody else, but she did appreciate the hugs from James, and she let him touch her when she wasn't that way with anybody else. Maybe it was because they'd been close for so long, that it was just natural. It was natural when he hugged her and it was natural whenever he put his arm around her. It didn't mean that they were in love like some people thought. It just meant that they cared about each other. It'd be weird if they didn't, since they were best friends. And what best friends didn't care about each other really?
Her close girlfriends in Gryffindor house all thought that she and James were blind. They all thought that she and James belonged together. But Kadie would simply laugh it off. Sure, James was good looking. Probably the best looking guy she could think of. But, he was her best friend. The one person she knew would always be there for her. The one person she knew that she would always be there for. She'd never allowed herself to think in a romantic way towards him because well, didn't that always ruin things? No. Best friends worked just fine for them. So the people who thought that they belonged together, were just crazy right? But Kadie never let herself think too hard on the subject. Why ruin a perfectly great relationship?
A grin crossed her features at the compliment. Maybe this was why she loved him so much. He had this natural ability to make her feel so good about herself. But then, she knew that any girl felt like that in his presence. She was just lucky enough to be the one he considered his best friend. But she knew that if he did in fact settle down with one girl later on, then that girl would be very lucky because James would treat whoever that was extremely well. Unlike other guys who didn't know how to treat girls. But she wasn't going to go there tonight. She was just excited to spend this evening with her awesome best friend.
"Yes, we should go have loads of fun!"she replied with a grin. It was Kadie's grin that usually came through around James. Other people may have seen her as a bookish girl. One that didn't know how to have fun, but that was simply not true. James brought out the crazy fun side of her. Probably because he was so crazy and fun himself. She laughed at his crazy clever lesson comment.
"Ancient runes is great. It's fascinating! Probably my favorite subject,"she replied with a grin.
"And how was your last class of the day?"she asked. The crowd was thick, but Kadie really only had her attention on James as they turned more towards the fire. She remembered how Marcus had hated James. But she'd told Marcus from the beginning that if he couldn't accept her hanging out with her best friend, then he could just forget it. Marcus had never learned to accept her and James' closeness, but he'd never said anything about it either, knowing full well that Kadie would have picked James over him if he'd forced her to choose. But that didn't mean she had feelings for James, right? It simply meant he was her best friend and she'd do anything for him. Why couldn't other people see it that way?

Secretly, he was incredibly proud of Kadie's academic ability. The only person that Kadie allowed herself really to depend on was James. In the past few years he had become really her family. Probably because both sets of parents weren't all that reliable or great. It still made her burn whenever she thought about his parents and what they'd done to him. But, they had each other. For that she was very grateful. Her parents weren't really exactly thrilled that she'd become so close to someone here. And they would have been less thrilled if they had known about the fact that he'd stayed on her sofa for part of the time.
But they hadn't known because they were her parents. And it really didn't matter to her either way. The housekeeper had known. But Jessie had been Kadie's nanny when she was younger and like a mother to her. After assuring Jessie that no funny business would be happening between her and James, Jessie had actually come to really adore James. And Kadie could see why. Her best friend was just easy to love.
Kadie laughed as he mimed being sick after she told him that ancient runes was a fascinating subject and probably her favorite, by far. She thought that he was crazy because his favorite was potions. Kadie couldn't stand that class. She just didn't have a knack fo rmaking potions at all. They tended to blow up in her face. Not as much anymore, but she definitely had to work her butt off in that class. Already she could tell that she might be locked up in that library preparing for that O.W.L examination more then she prepared for the other ones. Because the other ones, she had a firm handle on. But potions? Herbology wasn't her forte either. Who cared about stupid plants?
Stuff like Ancient Runes was fascinating to her. She was also really looking forward to her astronomy class, and care of magical creatures. Now those were fun. But she dreaded potions class every single time she had to go. Everything about it just digusted her. Having to go down in the dungeons, and the thought of potions maybe exploding in her face. She wasn't as bad as she'd once been. In her first year potions had exploded in her face nearly every day she'd gone in that class.
"Nah, I think you're the crazy one, enjoying potions!"she teased right back. She laughed at the areoplanes bit. "Yes, my boy is very talented,"she replied with a grin and a slight shake of her head.
It amused so many people that they were best friends, because everyone thought that they were so different. And really, in a lot of ways they were. But then, they didn't see the fun crazy side that she brought out around him, at least most of the time. Then they would probably understand why the two were best friends. Besides, being opposite in some ways was actually a really good thing for them.
"I'm starving. What do you say we go find some food, and the booze?"she asked with a grin. Now normally Kadie wasn't the one who suggested going to find the booze. She only drank it to be sociable. But she was in the mood for doing something crazy tonight, so what the hell right? She was sure that Jackson Michaels probably had some booze stashed away in his pocket. And she'd seen him go by just a minute ago. But she had no desire to talk to that dude, whatsoever.
She was just looking forward to letting loose. It was the perfect beginning of the year party. The professors were already breathing down their necks about the end of the year examinations. So this was a good way to forget about all of that, at least for a night and enjoy themselves.

The newly turned brunette had been there to lend a sofa and a ear for his problems and James would never forget it. Having not returned to his parents house since the summer of his third year at Hogwarts, James had used Kadie's sofa many many times, although he had met her parents rarely. He separate wing of the house was a luxury by any standards, and dwarfed James' parents entire flat. Her house keeper was one of the nicest women he knew and understood the two of them perfectly. He still visited his Grandmother regularly but always felt like a drain on her small funds so his visits were always brief and in between friends sofas or spare rooms. And then there had been the whole thing with Marcus (or "arse face" as James privately thought of him) which has tested James' friendship to the limit. James hadn't trusted him from the start, but had kept it quiet for Kadie's sake. He had watched Marcus and Kadie's relationship grow, stumble and fall and while it was always easy for him to be there for Kadie, it had been hard not to just punch Marcus in the face from the offset. Even through the ordeal of the pregnancy he had stood by his girl, although had voiced his objection on several occasions. They had fought a few time over it, James insistent that keeping the baby was the worst thing Kadie could do. He had always backed down in the end, worried about her health and not wanting to push her away from him and further into Marcus' clutches. James shivered; more from the recollections than the cool night air. He pulled his hoodie a little closer and tried to shake the thoughts of the too recent past. Pulling himself together he grinned at Kadie's teasing and her sarcastic complement. As she pointed them towards their first heading, James removed his arm from her shoulder and took her hand instead, lifting it over her head, inviting her to twirl through. "Your wish is my command dearest lady. Now, where are the burgers?!" He laughed and, letting go of her hand, sprang lightly ahead. "Race ya?!" His eyebrows darted up and down, teasing and daring her to race hi to the barbeque he could smell through the smoke of the bonfire. In the corner of his eye he caught sight of Jackson Michaels. James tried his hardest not to scowl. Now, there was a man who would have alcohol. But James was a man who would rather kiss the giant squid, than ask Jackson Michaels for so much as a spare quill. There would be other booze around and James was a sociable creature with a instinctive pull towards trouble. SO RAISE YOUR GLASS PARTY CRASHER TAG: HOPPO OUTFIT: ABOVE ONE LAST THING: Sorry it took so long to reply!
This year was shaping up to be amazing. First of all, there was Quidditch. And Kadie had been looking forward to that. I mean, she'd looked forward to it before making the team third year, but since making the team, it was particularly exciting. And sharing Quidditch with James made it all the more enjoyable. She was sure that James would then go on to play Quidditch professionally, and she would keep on going to games to support him. And she was sure that he'd make it because he was really good! If only his parents would come and watch, and then they'd see that his dream was good and they'd give up their own. Oh well. If they weren't going to support their son, then that was their problem. But Kadie would keep on supporting him no matter what.
Just as he supported her throughout the whole Marcus, pregnancy thing. That was just what best friends were for though, right? James was probably the only person she would do anything for. There were other people she cared about and would do a lot for, but none were James. Since first year, it was pretty easy growing to love him. James was just easy to love period.
At his suggestion, especially at the racing part, Kadie laughed, and she took off towards the smell of the burgers. She always let her little girl side come out around James. She could be as crazy as she wanted around him, and it didn't matter. Of course, Kadie was a mostly serious person. Especially in class or whatever. If she was more into authority figures she could have easily become a prefect or whatever. But it was always nice to let loose and have a great time as well.
She could smell the burgers. And she was definitely looking forward to having one. She'd always been a big fan of burgers because her mother had ruled burgers as a food she shouldn't eat to keep her figure. Any food that her mother didn't want her to eat, Kadie rebelled and went out and ate to spite her. Burgers and pop tarts were included in that list, and fries. It was amazing that Kadie did keep her figure because those had definitely become staples in Kadie's diet. What? She liked food.
As she reached the food, she saw a guy with a stash of alcohol. He was making sure that none of the professors were coming by. He was a somewhat friend of Kadie's, so she went up to him and paid him for a bottle of beer. She wasn't going for anything stronger at the moment, which was just fine with her. She'd get the party started with this and maybe progress later on.
The party had only just started and Kadie was already getting in the mood for it. She definitely was not stick in the mud Kadie tonight. Though she could be every once in awhile. But this was a party, and she was going to enjoy herself. And that meant with the food and the booze and with whatever else she and James could cook up. And in the past, they had come up with quite a few things to occupy themselves. They were quite the troublemakers. This side of herself, Kadie enjoyed the most. And it was always around James that it came out. So tonight, she was just looking forward to whatever trouble they could get into and whatever else they might be doing.
