She was one of the many people who loved to stare out at the night sky from their tower, and her mind was often very far when she was like this. It was about midnight, and mostly everyone seemed to already be sleeping, and of course she was the late bird. Her friends often told her that they thought she might have a drop of vampire blood in her or something, as she was always rather nocturnal. She loved the night, the later the better, and hated afternoons when the place tended to be more hot. These moments where she just sat, in the complete peace and quiet of the night with a cool wind blowing over her was really one that she loved.
A slight moment on the grounds distracted her train of thought, and she raised up slightly looking down near the forbidden forest. She was slightly disappointed to see that it just looked like someone's pet cat probably roaming the grounds for something to eat. She had always secretly desired to see something interesting, something that would lead to an adventure of some sort. But maybe those things only happened in books.. this was reality, after all. And reality didn't seem half as fun as things she'd read in books. Or maybe it was just her.
A light sigh escaped her lips, and she sat up, stretching out on the window seat. There was no way she was going to fall asleep as yet, despite it being the middle of the night. Deciding to go down and see if anyone else was awake still, she slid off of the window seat and tip-toed past the beds of the other girls in her year, hoping not to wake them up. She opened the door slightly, and it made a slight creaking noise as a dim light vaguely invaded the darkness of the room, before it closed silently behind her and she went down the staircase to the common room.
The Ravenclaw Common Room was one of the places that she felt most comfortable, probably as she had spent a great deal of the past four (and now entering her fifth) years of her life here, that was pretty understandable. Though the entrance was a bit frustrating sometimes, as just earlier today she had been in a rush and couldn't answer the question to be let in, and so had to wait until someone who knew the answer came along. She loved all the blue and bronze, and it had a graceful, elegant beauty about it that she doubted the other houses, except maybe Slytherin, could accomplish with their colours. She opened the door, entering the common room and looking around to see if anyone would be there or if she was the only nocturnal bird who couldn't sleep.

It was late at night and everyone in the dorm was asleep except for one Emmalee Davis. She couldn't sleep. In fact she hadn't even changed out of what she wore that day because she didn't feel tired enough to lay down. She did lounge on her bed to read a book though. She had a book light so that she could see since the lights were obviously off. If she were to keep the lights on, her roommates would probably kill her, so she tried to make due with the small light.
Reading was one of her favorite pastimes. There were just so many interesting books out there. Fiction and nonfiction. If she could, she'd probably read all day. But, there was just no time for it. She had classes to take and people to spend time with. Things in her life that were more important that just sitting around reading words that a person wrote down for entertainment. She couldn't give up everything and everyone in her life. Reading was probably a lot more exciting when she did read though, since she didn't have a lot of time to do it. It made her more eager to read. Plus, it was like you were getting out of your world and entering another one. Especially when reading fiction. She loved to use her imagination. It was so much better than having the pictures shown to you. Even when she was young she wanted chapter books instead of picture books.
Getting annoyed with the small light she had, she decided she was going to go down to the common room. No one was probably up anyway so she'd be able to read in peace down there. She took the book light off of the book she was reading and set it on her nightstand. After that, she closed the book and swung her legs over the side of the bed, standing up when she felt her feet touch the ground. With her book in hand, she walked down the stairs to the common room and walked in looking around for where she wanted to sit. You'd think she'd be upset that she spotted someone sitting down there, but she wasn't. Not at all.
Liberty was the girl's name. She had known her since her second year when Liberty had first come to Hogwarts as a first year student. Emmalee was still trying to get past her depression from her mother's death and Liberty was terrified of being there. Emma, being the way she is, reached out to Liberty to try to make her feel better and to feel more comfortable with the school. She not only helped her, but she helped herself in the process. Other than music, helping Liberty helped her get her mind off of her mom. Smiling at the girl, she moved over to one of the couches and sat down. "Hello Liberty." Her voice was joyful. She was happy almost one hundred percent of the time. Especially when she spends time with her friends

Arianne was really used to staying up late in the nights. When she was younger, she would do it just for fun, because she didnt like to sleep and there was always something new and interesting to read - at that time she would even make do with fairytales and fiction, both of which she had sworn off since. When she got older, and got into Hogwarts, it would be more magical stuff, but honestly she didnt really mind as long as it had some basis in reality - she'd read Physics (though increasingly, magic contradicted even basic physics), she solve muggle maths, she'd read old magical and muggle history and see where the two interconnected and also what the muggles had just plain forgotten, or rather suppressed, and most importantly she'd read about charms, and potions, and transfiguration, and try to understand and memorize as much information as she probably could.
But as school started, and the more she moved up in school, it was increasingly the latter. More time meant better learning, more memorizing, more marks, and it was increasingly becoming more important to do better and better and better even though she didnt really know what she was aiming for, except that she was aiming for the best. So she spent every spare moment studying, and tried to hope that she would be able to get the kind of marks she needed to get. Classes hadnt even started properly but she'd started - because, after all, she had to advance reading and advance practicing and in general know more before she'd ever even enter the classroom.
So she'd studied all day in anticipation of there being classes tomorrow, and then when she'd finally gone to sleep (mostly because she had to be refreshed to learn, or she might still continue) it had been an anxious, restless sleep. At intervals, if anyone was noticing, you might hear the girl mutter random things in her sleep, and after about an hour she woke up with a start, conscious that she'd had a nightmare but not sure what it had been about. She waited a few moments, trying to get to sleep, and then, when she realized that she couldnt sleep anymore, got up and looked at the books by her bedside. They were all at perfect 45 degree angles to each other, forming a neat and high spiral - she'd just picked them up from the library. The one she was in the middle of reading, a Potions text, was the highest. She picked it up, realized she couldnt read without any light, and slowly made her way down to the common room.
The light felt too bright after the extreme darkness outside, and it took Arianne a moment to let her eyes adjust to the darkness. It was then that she spotted the two girls at the bottom of the staircase, and she smiled, almost instinctively. If it had to be anyone in that common room, she was really, really glad it was these two. Liberty was one of her closest friends ever, and Emmalee was more like an older sister that she'd never had, and they were both part of the few people that she really missed when she went home for the holidays, the few close friends she'd actually made while at Hogwarts.
"Hey you both," she said, walking down the staircase. "You're still up?" It was, after all, quite late in the night. She stopped on the way to straighten a picture on the stairs that had become a little crooked, and also straightened what she was wearing. Before coming down, Arianne had taken the time to change into a pair of jeans and a white shirt with a blue sweater on top, mostly because she was cold. Because it was night-time, her usual tight ponytail and pins were replaced by a butterfly clip, but she'd still ensured that none of the hair would come on her face. Arianne could be trusted to be impeccable even in the middle of the night.

..it was a cold and dark night, quiet as well, except for the weird, eerie creaking coming from one solitary chair. With a quick motion, Christa shut the book, gave a small sigh and placed it back on her bedside table. She wasn't in the mood to read anything at the moment, most especially not stories involving scary, creaking chairs. Her eyes darted to one side of the room where she could only see a bed, but no owner. The night sky had began to take its true form and still, the young fifteen year old could no nothing but slowly lie on her back and take in the ceiling. She began to think, which in her case, she liked to call contemplation. So this was the scene that took place the next five minutes or so. After this, she stood up and decided to just hang around the common room for a while, until her eyes met their match of course. Hopefully enough, there would be people hanging around as well since it was a nature for any Ravenclaw to be up til the wee hours of the morning, studying or just fancying a good reading night.
Stepping out, the scene that met her eyes was as expected. In one corner of the room she could see were three girls, two who were easily recognizable as her room mates and one other whose name she wasn't quite sure of but still, very much familiar. Well, company was better than none. She took slow careful strides towards the trio, hesitating every once in a while like the awkward girl she was. "I guess I'm not the only one who has trouble with sleeping," she said this with a small, sheepish grin. Most girls would say hi or hello and that was it, for Christabel though, her instincts to say things that seemed out of the ordinary are up to this day, a mystery to her.
Her eyes darted across the room for a quick sweep to see who was still up, surprisingly, not as much as there often was. The ones she couldn't quite recognize fairly well all seemed to have one thing in common which was studying, she couldn't blame them though, what with the poor light their common rooms have. Or maybe teachers expect them to be masters of the lumos spell and see it as a reason as to why the lights should remain so dim. She did feel pleased though that she had opted for long pajamas as opposed to shorts for the night, it was a chilly evening. Her hands fumbled behind her back as she awaited, sleepily and yet eagerly for any reply coming from them.

It was getting late. Aisling knew it. She probably should head back to her dorm. If she had been back home, being out and about in the middle of the night really meant nothing. She'd be up with the sun as per usual, be slightly sleepy during the day and probably make it an early night the following. She went by what her body told her, which was rarely conventional, and sometimes would get her in trouble. Luckily, nothing like that had occurred thusfar tonight. The young Ravenclaw had been wandering the passageways of the school in search of the Room of Requirement. Her brother recently sent her a letter telling her of its existence and she was too eager to wait to find it. So she had spent at least a good hour trying to get the door to appear and then it finally did. Aisling wasn't too surprised but couldn't imagine the scene before her when the door opened. She was back home and the next few hours felt like minutes. When she finally stared at her watch, she reluctantly turned towards the door and blew a kiss to the Burren as she exited.
Outside, she found it completely empty and quiet- not to mention dark. Not a soul was about, literally. Maybe the ghosts had all gone to be (did they sleep?) but Aisling couldn't see anyone or hardly anything. It took her some time trying to figure out how to get back to her tower as well. The wandering from before left her on less than clear directions and it was late. She was getting to be quite sleepy and she knew that she had to be vigilant as to not get caught in case a professor or prefect rounded the corner.
Fortunately for the little rule-breaker, that never happened. She found herself outside the portal to the Ravenclaw commonroom with a riddle awaiting her. Her fatigue made her take longer than usual, something that the portrait commented on. Aisling took offense to it and mouthed off a bit after she gave her answer and the door swung open.
"Snarky little know-it-all," she muttered to herself, not bothering to be too quiet. After all, she expected the commonroom to be empty at this hour, so she was quiet surprised to see four girls gathered in the middle.
They didn't appear to have been there long, but they did seem like they were all on good terms. She recognized every face and knew one of them was Arianne. Aisling wasn't close with a single one of them, having been younger than each one. She felt like she was intruded and her face held a pained expression conveying those exact emotions for everyone of them to see. It was a tad awkward and Aisling would have to move past them to get up to her room. Something made her feel like it wasn't going to happen. A trap of social gathering was hanging thickly in the air, and Aisling felt like prey.

Liberty had barely glanced at the common room when she heard footsteps behind her. She was at the bottom of the stairs still when she saw Emmalee coming down moments after she did. She smiled one of her true smiles at seeing the older girl coming down. Emmalee was one of the few people that had gotten close to Liberty's heart, who she truly cared about and was close to. When she had been in her first year, it was Emmalee who showed her the ropes, helped the awkward, introverted girl to fit in better. Lib still wasn't a social butterfly like Em, and had yet to overcome her shyness but she had come a long way in comparison to her first year. "Hey Em," she said, as she went over to the couch opposite Emmalee and sat down, curling up her feet underneath her.
Before she could say anything else, she heard soft footsteps coming from the staircase again, and looked up to see Arianne emerging from the common room now. She wondered if she had woken her up with the creaking door when she left, and was about to open her mouth to apologise but Arianne spoke first, and smiled at what she asked. "That's a silly question Ari.. you know me. I'm always up this hour," she responded, which was partially true. Maybe she wasn't every single night, but it was common to see Liberty out of bed at night, either by the window seat in their dormitory or in the common room. Her smile reappeared just as it had when she saw Emmalee.
She took one look at the potions book in her friends hand and smiled knowingly, shaking her head. "Really Arianne, you deserve a break you know." Liberty was guilty of reading up on material before they did it in class as well, but at this hour of the night she would be more likely to be enjoying a history or a Muggle studies book or something. She loved potions, but mostly the practical part of it. Though the practical was so closely intertwined with the theory, that it interested her as well. Em was one of her closest friends, and Arianne was her best friend. No one knew Liberty better than Arianne. The two had so much in common, from the first week they had clicked. Between their similarities and that due to the same house, year and classes they spent most of the time in each others company. She was extremely glad that these two girls were the ones who ended up being here, as they were the ones she was most comfortable around. She addressed Arianne again, "did I wake you up when I left? I'm sorry if I did, that door always seems to creak when I open it."
Another sound from near the staircase caught her attention again, and this time it was Christabel. She often saw Christabel as a very sweet and friendly girl, and got along well with her. "Hey Christa," she greeted. "I guess you're not the only one. I'm starting to think that our house animal should have been a vampire bat instead of an eagle," she joked, "or an owl maybe." She loved their animal and colours though, there was such an elegance to it. She loved it. Gryffindor and Hufflepuff had warm colours, Slytherin's was elegant as well but had a soft of cold feel to it. The blue and bronze of Ravenclaw was perfect, to her.
Movement over at the entrance to their tower caught her attention, and she looked over in slight surprise. Who was coming in this late? She glanced at her watch. It was after midnight. A small blonde girl came in, muttering something about 'know-it-all', and knew she was probably talking about the eagle knocker on the door. The face was familiar, and Liberty was sure that she was younger than the rest of them but she had no idea what her name was or exactly which year she was in, and being shy as she was she had never approached or spoken to the girl before. She smiled shyly at the girl, feeling a bit less relaxed than before as someone she didn't really know was here now. She recognised that the younger girl felt awkward, and her heart immediately reached out to be welcoming to her- she knew that feeling too. "Hi there," she said with a friendly smile, not sure what else she should say.

Seeing people smile, only made Emmalee happier. Especially if she could tell it was a true smile and not one to simply hide what they really felt. So, when she saw Liberty smile, and really smile, it was only natural for her to smile brighter than what she had been before. When Emmalee had first met Liberty, she felt like it was an honor to see her smile, because to her, she rarely did so. At least at first. Emma felt horrible for Liberty. She had this gut feeling that something was not right at home. Every time she would ask about Liberty’s home life, she’d avoid the question or say that she didn’t want to talk about it. Each time that happened, Emmalee grew more and more curious about the situation. Nonetheless, she let the situation go. She didn’t want to force anyone into talking about something they didn’t want to talk about.
Her head turned to where Arianne now entered. Arianne was another one of Emma’s close friends. She loved Arianne. She was like another little sister to her. Emmalee had a younger sister. She was in her second year now, but it felt like she didn’t get to see her very often. It made Emma sad, but it was easier knowing she was here with her, then when she used to have to come to Hogwarts and leave her at home. With a smile upon her face she nodded to the girl. “Hello Arianne.” She lifted up her book to show the Arianne what she was planning on doing. “I was trying to read because I wasn’t tired. The little book light wasn’t enough, so I came down here. But Liberty was here, so of course I couldn’t start reading. I just had to talk to my friend.” She told her, laughing lightly.
Emmalee was just about to ask how the two were when another girl came into the common room. It was easy to tell that she was awkward about the situation. The girl’s name was Christabel, or Christa as Liberty called her. Emmalee didn’t know her personally, but she had seen her around before. She seemed like a nice girl, but she never got the chance to know her. Maybe this would be the time. “Hello, I’m Emmalee.” She told the girl, in case she was wondering who she was. Her friendly grin was on the whole time. There was no reason to frown. Especially not now when she had friends around and new people, who seemed nice enough, to talk to.
A light laugh escaped from her lips because of Liberty’s comment. It was the truth. A lot of Ravenclaws did stay up late. Emmalee liked to think that this house was the more dedicated to studies. Of course, there were a lot of other smart people in the other houses, but Ravenclaws were known for smarts. A noise from outside the Ravenclaw entrance made her head turn in that direction and watch as another girl entered. What was she doing out so late? It was one thing to be up late, but to be outside this late? That was different. However, she didn’t ask the girl about it, because she seemed scared enough. Being her normal self and reaching out like she did to Liberty and Arianne she gave a small wave at the girl and smiled. “Hello.”

She descended down slowly, her footsteps a silent tip tap on the cool floor, and walked towards her friends. Arianne walked in the same way that she did everything else - cautiously, repetitively, and with a pattern to it. She would always walk with her right leg first, and if on steps every alternate step she would join her right leg and left leg before continuing forward, an odd habit that she didnt think just about anyone had noticed. Even on the plain ground as she walked towards her two close friends, her footsteps were soft, but fast, though she was not tall enough to take really long long strides. In fact, Arianne took about one stride where others took two.
"That's a silly question Ari.. you know me. I'm always up this hour."
She smiled at that. She did indeed know that. While Arianne didnt sleep because she thought she had to, Liberty actually seemed to enjoy it. She blushed at Liberty's next statement, however, it made her conscious of the potions book. "I know," she said, defensively. "I couldnt sleep so I decided that I'd take the time to prepare a bit for tomorrow. Potions is hard, you know." Perhaps she did not know, because Liberty was exceptionally good at potions - so good that she often purposefully did things wrong. For Arianne, succeeding at Potions had become somewhat personal, it wasnt just about doing well academically, she had to prove that she was good enough at one of the few subjects she actually liked and thought she could manage to do.
She stopped and smiled at Emmalee. "I had almost the same idea,"
she said with a grin. She placed the Potions book on a nearby table - and after making sure it was exactly parallel to the edge, she turned back to her companions. "But you're right, now that we're all up we can even do something fun." Though Arianne wouldnt admit it, most of her reason for suggesting that they do something 'fun' had been because of what Liberty had said - something that Liberty would surely see through, though it had been worth a try. She turned back at the person who knew her the best, and smiled. "Nah, you didnt wake me up. I had some vague...nightmare." She paused, frowned. She had never ever actually had nightmares before. Before she could think about it further, she heard another noise from behind her, and smiled at Christabel as she came down the stairs. Christabel was also one of her closest friends, one of her roommates, and she liked her, even if she sometimes couldnt exactly get along with her as she could with Liberty. "We're all in the same boat," she said, in response to Christabel's statement, and then laughed as Lillith said that their house animal should have been a vampire - or an owl. "I dont think a vampire is an animal," she said. "Though an owl - or perhaps a cat, would have been just fine." Arianne often wished she could have a cat, though the thought of the hair and the smell and their claws made her shy away from the idea each and every time. "Snarky little know-it-all." The sound was sudden and unexpected, especially since it came from the entrance, where Arianne had not been expecting anyone to enter from. Soon enough, a tiny girl who Arianne vaguely recognized as belonging to her house had entered the room. While Em and Liberty extended friendly greetings to the girl, Arianne instead remembered that she was a prefect, and though her patrolling duties hadnt started yet it was her job to make sure that no students were roaming around in the nights, and she felt it was her duty to ask her about what she'd been doing. Arianne took her duties very seriously, even though she thought they were a waste of her time and that she could have easily been doing something a lot more productive if she had all that time spent in patrolling and meetings to herself to study. "You were out pretty late," she said, deciding that the usage of mildly bad language towards the eagle knocker could be ignored for once, even though it was there in the Hogwarts rule book as a rule against profanity. Her voice was kind but firm - she was waiting for an explanation, and while she was quite willing to hear it she could let the girl go without that. This was another reason why she didnt particularly like being Prefect, she hated to have to call out other people's mistakes and ask them for explanation, and especially not her friends. That required a different kind of courage that Arianne was not quite sure she possessed. [/blockquote][/blockquote] count : 800 tags : ravenclaw girls noted : hey everyone! By then the young fifteen year old had taken a seat right next to Arianne, she had to admit, Liberty had a point in terms of changing their house animal. I agree as well on an owl, but we don't exactly sleep during the day," she pointed out. This got her to thinking, why exactly, out of all nocturnal animals out there, Helena Ravenclaw had chosen a raven. Sure, she had to admit that they were quite intelligent but owls had the wisdom of the ages, or so story books and whatnot had told her. But if she were to have it her way, the raven was a perfect choice.
Her attention was then directed to the Ravenclaw sitting along with them whom she didn't quite recognize, let alone know, that was until of course she had introduced herself. As she took in her features, she couldn't help noticing their similarity of blonde hair, putting that aside, she returned the girls smile "Christabel, its a pleasure to meet you,". She had to admit it, there was this bubbly feeling inside her which was always the same whenever she met someone new.
Hearing a reply from Arianne, she felt more at ease after an awkward silence since she had gotten to know her quite well given that they've been in the same room along with Liberty for the past five years. Although not quite that close yet, she was pleased with the progress though. "Gets you thinking if students from the other houses stay up this late as well," she had always been, oftentimes though, intrigued with what the other houses looked like, was it built the same way as theirs? did they have the same oftentimes annoying yet tricky eagle knocker?
Speaking of eagle knockers, she felt surprised when she heard the entrance of the common room open, surely it wouldn't just open by itself just for the fun of it. Her questions were answered when she heard a voice that certainly belonged to a human being, when the figure emerged from the shadows, there stood another girl who was another mystery to crack. The face wasn't the least bit familiar but she had to admire her guts at entering this late. Although you may say there was a bit of a spark of adventure in Christabel, she wasn't quite a sucker for rule breaking. While the rest of the girls extended her greetings, and Arianne her question of curiosity, the young fifteen year old let impulse take over her body, the result being her giving a small wave with a smile to match.

Liberty gave another small smile when Emmalee mentioned that she had originally came down to read, but when she saw Liberty there she just had to talk to her. Little things like that often meant the world to Liberty... to her, it was the small things that mattered most in life. Big things mattered too but a million little things were could impact so amazingly. As little as one of your friends feeling the need to talk to you. Maybe that was just it- it made her feel like someone when the few but precious close friends she had said things like that. It made the quiet Ravenclaw girl feel more visible in a world where people like her were impartially looked overlooked.
At Arianne's comment about potions being hard, Liberty decided to take the safest route and remain silent. In truth, she did not know, as potions was one of the subjects that just came naturally and easy for her. She loved potions with a passion. Not many people knew of that though, as she preferred to let people (including the Professor) believe that she was just the typical quiet, average student in potions. She was not about to mention that she did not find potions hard thoug, as no good would come out of it. It would almost be as if she were attacking Arianne's already low self esteem, and there was no way she would ever do something like that. Even if it would not bother Arianne she still would not have said it.
What was the point saying something that did not contribute to someone else positively? The decision had already been established in her mind a long time ago that she would try her hardest to let her words and actions towards others be something that impacted them in a good way, other wise there was no point in saying or doing anything at all. She knew people, for example her father, who seemed to prefer to do the opposite- break down people leaving them bruised, broken and worse than they had been before he had spoken to them. She was not going to let herself be like that.
She smiled knowingly when Arianne suggested that they do something fun, putting aside her potions book in the process. She knew that Arianne was only saying that as a response to Liberty's comment at her needing a break. It was true though, and whatever the reason she was glad that her friend had put aside the potions book. Honestly, the girl would study herself to death if she were not careful. Liberty did not completely understand why Arianne was so determined when it came to doing well at her studies, though she did have an idea. She could tell that it was personal though, and respected that. Times like these when she got an opportunity to encourage her friend to relax though, she took it gladly. She nodded curiously in response to Arianne mentioning that she had a nightmare, and a small frown came upon her own face. She decided against asking in front of everyone else though, as she was not sure if Arianne wanted to elaborate.
"Gets you thinking if students from the other houses stay up this late as well." Liberty nodded in agreement with Christabel thoughtfully. "Hufflepuffs are hard working, generally, so maybe some of them stay up late to study like the Ravenclaws do," she commented, making a point to glance at Arianne as she did so. Though Liberty was guilty of doing the same thing in the past, she had to admit. "As for Slytherins.. I don't mean to sound prejudiced, but I'd think that maybe if they do they are not generally studying..." she said, trailing off slightly.
