THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • ) Although Astrid usually thought Diana as being the kind of girl who made insults and comments out of nothing and with no real meaning, as her best friend remarked on her future marriage she sensed something a bit deeper than the usual bit. In fact, Astrid didn't really have a witty response to this. Not the first part, that was the usual Diana and Astrid had the complete capability to knock that out. It was the part about her being caged up, locked away from her slutty, devious ways. How would she live without that? Of course, she didn't think her marriage was going to be all smiles and fun, her parent's marriage certainly wasn't.
Astrid had always thought of marriage as a job, pop out a couple babies and the job's done. Her mind had never taken the other factors into effect. She was just grasping that she would have to control her instincts to sleep with every man that walked into her home. And did she really want to be known as the town whore when she had children and a husband and was settled down. She knew the answer to this was no, but like an addict she didn't want to give up the rush of every man's eyes on her. She tried to answer coolly and surprisingly it came out that way. "Please, I have control over my actions. I choose to be the way I am. I assume you of all people know that I'm not a problem case, I just love men."
She smirked a little, although her stomach reminded her that she still had some thinking to do. She had gotten past the current moment, and that was all that mattered. But that attitude was exactly how she had gotten to where she was, never thinking about her future. Diana snapped Astrid back into reality as she began talking about her mystery man again. Of course, Diana as planned did not approve of this unshaven man. But that was probably why Astrid thought she would like him. Clean shaven men look like boys, but a little scruffiness could be very sexy. Although now that Astrid thought about it, her imagined man would probably end up alone in a bar forever. She said exactly what she thought. "Oh right, you still like the young ones. I'm sorry I need myself a real man every once in a while."
Astrid winked at the little bits leftover from the crowd and saw a few smile back at her. She turned away quickly, and practically bathed in their lingering looks. Although most of them had moved on, the older boys had the courage to look longer. Another note Astrid took to defend herself. She wondered if it was her imagination or if people seemed to be much more attracted to her than her best friend. She was definitely more known throughout the school, but that was the fault of Diana. And not everyone in the school listened to gossip, so was there something else. Astrid couldn't believe that she was more interesting than Diana (she was certainly not), or that she was prettier than her (also not true). Maybe it was because she got into more trouble, that she could believe.
Waking up again, Diana had responded to her comment about aiming to please, this she thought was a slight sign of irony. Because she had never seen Diana do anything for anyone but herself. She wanted dearly to point this out, but she was sure that Diana knew. Plus, she didn't want to argue over something they both knew the answer to. Those arguments were one of the many reasons that Astrid had to take a break from Diana every other day. She never stopped, never stopped talking, never stopped lying, and plain just never stopped. But what Astrid thought was even worse than that was she expected her to go along with it. The girl had such nerve! "Come on Diana, do I really know you?"
Astrid startled herself, where had that come from? It was probably her inner mind picking a fight again, but Astrid wasn't even thinking about that part. Maybe it was because she could argue better with this. She honestly didn't know Diana very well, even if the girl confided in her often and sometimes a little too often, she didn't know anything about her family or her last school or why she did any of the things she did.

"Please, I have control over my actions. I choose to be the way I am. I assume you of all people know that I'm not a problem case, I just love men."
"Oh not just men, you know - giant squid, et al. I think you love the love more than anything else." Diana had her sudden moments of profoundity, without even paying much attention to them, though in this case she suspected that she loved the love and attention a lot more than Astrid did. Having been starved of attention for most of her life - first from her parents, who never had time for her among their own problems - to her grandfather, who always seemed to prefer his women - and to her peers in Durmstrang who had always passed over her. That was why she was at Hogwarts, because she was tired of being passed over. And that was why she flirted with random guys, even slept with them sometimes, because the way their eyes always came back to her was far too tempting to be passed over.
"Oh right, you still like the young ones. I'm sorry I need myself a real man every once in a while."
She shrugged. "Well, you're welcome to them. I just get whisker burns and end up getting put off." Also, all such men reminded her a little too much of her father - especially because she couldn't remember him too well - just as having a rugged beard and a uni-brow and that sweaty look of a working man. "I don't prefer little boys. I prefer sophisticated, clean people. Forgive me for being so picky." The last part was meant to be sarcastic, and was said with appropriate facial expression - a roll of her bright blue eyes and the uplift of her eyebrows. She could certainly say a lot without any words - when she wanted to. A lot of it came naturally to her, though she knew a lot of it was stuff she had painstakingly learnt in order to be perfect in pulling off her deceptions. Too bad the actual lying had never been a problem - the later part was much more important.
She looked at Astrid winking at the crowd, and then realized why no one was giving her any more attention - she had dried off. The clothes she was wearing were still a short and hot (if a little bland - she should have gone for more color), but it seemed like she'd lost the crowd. That irritated her mildly, so she decided that the only thing to be done was to find a new crowd. Perhaps one less filled with good boys and with a few more slytherins around. She needed someone knew to get over Liam. Some exciting story she could tell Astrid, who did not seem to find Liam exciting or interesting enough. She had already been planning to do something exciting that day, and now that Astrid was here perhaps they could do something good. She had to admit that Astrid had good ideas and the nerve to carry them out. She spotted her pair of heels behind a small stone, and picked them, slipping the first on and was about to pull on the other when she heard Astrid start talking again.
"Come on Diana, do I really know you?"
"What?" she said, and for the first time her loud, obnoxious voice had faded into something more soft and somehow more vulnerable. The shoe trembled slightly before she regained her composure and started putting it back on. Where the hell was THAT coming from? It couldn't be two revealed lies in one day, could it? This was certainly very unexpected, and a little more than Diana could handle. Was Astrid going to want to talk about it? Was there some way they could talk about all this without the crowd looking at her? Would denial help? Would feeding Astrid a sob-story help? Oh shit. She had no idea. She decided that acting as normal as possible and trying to figure out what had given her away would work better than an out-and-out confrontation right there in the middle of the crowd.
"Of course you know me," she said. Her voice had returned to normal, as had her demeanor, she was now once again taking something out of her hand bag - this time a tube of strawberry lip-gloss to repair all the water damage. "Whats with the sudden question?" she asked, trying hard to sound like it didn't matter even a little bit to her and just about succeeding. "Getting all sentimental and grandmother-ish, are we, darling?" she said, this time succeeding completely in sounding like she always did. Normally, this wouldn't have caught her so off guard, but what with the incident last night, she was just too pert up.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • ) With all the little quirks and comments to pick and tease at, Diana chose to bring up the stupid little giant squid again. Astrid wrinkled her nose at the mention of it, a small bit of loathing caught in her throat. The gossipy girl was beginning to get very annoying but Astrid didn't want to let it show that the giant squid comment affected her. So she quietly giggled, trying to prove that she thought the squid ordeal was as funny as her friend did.
Her annoyance of a friend continued on, giving traits as to why boys were better than men. And although Diana had a few points, none of them amounted to changing her mind. Diana's points were more to convince herself, they probably reassured her that she was picky and only slept with the best of men. But Astrid knew better, Diana just had to think she was sleeping with a good man. She didn't actually test him or know him, she let herself believe it and that would make it so.
Astrid did not say anything more on the subject, accepting that the two had different tastes. Which agreeably was a good thing, a world where Astrid and Diana were fighting over men would be an endangered and scary world indeed. Therefore why fight over which boy/man was better? Especially when the inner Astrid was looking for a much larger fight.
This larger fight, had started with only eight words. But they startled both girls very much. Astrid because she wasn't expecting them, because she knew that were always somewhere in the back of her mind but because she had never thought to say them before. And why Diana was startled, which was certainly a sight to see, was still unclear. But before Astrid's eyes, Diana panicked. Although her questions were simple enough, and nothing in her stature condemned her to guiltiness, she wasn't acting like Diana. Her teasing voice and witty comments had disappeared, her flashing blue eyes were filled with something unidentified.
Astrid, the same way did not know how to reply. She could back off of the matter and continue the way they always did. But then she would lose her chance, a chance she didn't know she longed for until now. "Sentimental? Grandmother-ish? I didn't know you felt those feelings. But I suppose you could feel them for your family, or your fortune." Although Astrid did not see how she could squeeze her friend into a corner, simply because the only thing she was relying on was a gut feeling and a bunch of facts that didn't quite match up.
"Yes now I remember, you've cuddled your fortune before. But I can't quite remember anything about your family." Lie, Diana had told her plenty about her family. But anyone could have guessed that half the things she told her were lies themselves. Astrid smiled out of the corner of her mouth. She looked at Diana, hoping to see a bit more panic. She wanted to feel like she had control of her friend. She was done with the annoying gossipy self-centered bitch, and she wanted to see this girl squirm.
But at the same time, Astrid felt this could turn on her. What if she was wrong? What if Diana just didn't talk about her family, Astrid certainly hadn't told her everything. What if Diana had the same kind of wicked, rotten home life she did? As this thought entered Astrid's head, she felt her stomach roll into a knot. The thought of being a simply horrible person, edging her to apologize and fast. But could she turn back now? No, it was too late. She would have to wait and see how this turned out.

So far, the conversation had been right within her comfort zone. The childish fighting, the insults, the name-calling - well, with her combination of lies and rumors Diana felt that she was pretty good at all that, sometimes even more biting than Astrid. That was probably why she enjoyed fighting with Astrid so much. Poor Astrid, after all, was pretty much restricted to the truth - which while quite cutting didn't have the scope that Diana's own lies did. But this new direction the conversation was taking had thrown Diana a little bit out of step, she needed some time to recoup and not get caught up in the sentimental crap that had its way of making her say difficult-to-explain things. Things that tended to get her into trouble.
"Sentimental? Grandmother-ish? I didn't know you felt those feelings. But I suppose you could feel them for your family, or your fortune."
She wasn't particularly sure why she'd said that. Mostly she'd been trying to buy some time. It was a bit lame, but whatever. "Well, I do feel that way about my family. Sometimes. Some friends, too, okay, maybe not too many. Maybe you." She said it casually, trying to get a chance to think. Wow, but that was a major lie. She hadn't felt any sentiment for a very long time. The only reason why she'd cried when her grandfather (who she considered her only family) had died was because she'd been afraid of what would happen to her and if one of his women had managed to make him re-write his will for her. And she certainly didn't feel a smidge of sentiment for Astrid, she probably wouldn't shed a tear if she died or whatever. "And well, my fortune too," she said, returning back to speed. "What would I do without it, after all?" That was true enough.
"Yes now I remember, you've cuddled your fortune before. But I can't quite remember anything about your family."
Outwardly, Diana maintained her innocent expression, now fiddling around with her lip gloss and applying just a smidge too much on her full lips. But inside she was whirring. Of course she'd told Astrid something or the other about her family, but she wasn't sure exactly what, and not in the mood to risk calling out her lies, so she decided that it was time to be a little ambiguous. She was pretty sure she hadn't told Astrid anything particularly sensitive yet, just the regular happy family picture, though she wasn't too sure of the details. Then why was Astrid continuing on this line of investigation? Had Liam said something? No, she didn't think so, he wasn't the type. Well, two could play Astrid's game, whatever it was. "Well, of course you know about my family," she said, beginning to warm up. "Its perfect, of course," she said with a reluctant smile. She was trying to sound like she was trying to hard, and mostly succeeding. "Happy, and awesome, and..."
She paused, and then went for the kill. Damn, but she was a good actress, even if Astrid didn't believe it. "Too bloody perfect," she said more quietly. "But isn't every family?" she continued in a very small voice, barely audible to Astrid. She sounded like she was talking to herself, trying to convince herself, but all of that was very much for Astrid's benefit. She also sounded like she was just about to cry. She was very good at that too. She had decided that it was time - time to do some fake confiding in Astrid, and Diana thought she knew exactly the story to do it with.
She was enjoying herself immensely. Not only was she getting a chance to do some storytelling, but she might also get something from Astrid - like why she was asking. If there was one thing that Diana absolutely hated, it was her secrets coming out, and she'd fight if she had to to make sure that that did not happen at any cost. But of course, it was hard to supress rumors, especially if you didn't know who'd started them and which circles they might have spread to (depending on the person) - a fact she knew rather too well, considering how often she used it to get back to someone who had annoyed her. But she was also watching Astrid carefully, knowing that she wouldn't be half as trusting or easy to fool as most people were. Not at all.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • ) Diana was undoubtfully and unquestionably a talented witch. Although Astrid had never quite seen her magical skills. She was talented in a different but equally useful area. This area was known generally and publically as the branch of lying. This branch spread out to many other talents, but the one she saw at work before her eyes was softened by the term, acting. Softened, because this acting was equally as sharp and dangerous as her common lying. But somehow it had gotten stuffed into the acting category instead. This acting probably wouldn't have been so dangerous if Diana wasn't simply brilliant at it.
It was this brilliance that was currently catching Astrid off guard. Although she hardly ever believed her best friend, or trusted her with any information; Diana was doing a pretty good job at convincing her now. Everything from the comment about caring about her to the squeaks in her voice that made it sound like she was about to cry. It was certainly unlike Diana to spoil her appearance with the unpleasant emergence of tears. But did this necessarily mean that she was telling the truth? Absolutely not. Astrid just seemed to overlook that her best friend was an evil genius, and got caught up in the way her sad face made her seem oh so innocent.
But hadn't they just been saying that Diana couldn't be mistaken for innocent, no matter what she did? This was obviously a mistake on Astrid's part, with the cautious steps Diana was taking and the sweetness that had been forced onto her face; she could definitely be mistaken for anything she wanted to be. She was talking about her family and as she retold Astrid about them, there was a sweet bitterness in her voice. It was obvious, that this was a lie. But was Diana pulling her into asking the dire question, what's wrong? She wasn't really interested in her best friend's home life, but if Diana needed her she would probably step forward so that they could get the ordeal over with.
Yes, Diana's voice quivered as she continued. And it was obvious now that Astrid had to comfort her, whether she truly needed it or not. She sounded like she was trying to convince herself that her family was perfect. And when she asked, maybe rhetorically if every family was perfect Astrid decided this was her moment to jump in. Astrid put her hand on Diana's shoulder. "Is something wrong?" She wasn't very good at comforting, it ran in the Elkjaer family but at the moment it wasn't doing her any good. "You can tell me anything, Di." Her conscience reminded her that she should not necessarily believe everything Diana told her.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw one of her fellow students poking his head over another's shoulder - obviously catching the sniffle in Diana's voice. Astrid, being one to hate gossip, even if it was doing justice for once and trying to get back at Diana glared at the crowd. Her glare forced him to look away and it didn't seem like anyone else would dare to try peeking at the two. Astrid just to make sure said, "Maybe we should start walking, so that you can spill." Her smile was faint as she linked her arm with Diana but not wanting to drag the girl, waited to walk together. If Astrid was trying to get some satisfaction out of catching Diana off guard, it hadn't worked. Pretending wasn't one of her favorite activities and now she would have to pretend to care.
And when she thought that pretending to care was such a burden, it sounded pretty terrible. Like Astrid was without a heart, and although this was mostly true she could care about her best friend. The caring would have to come from a very deep part of her heart and be 80% lies but when you've had so little friends or people who you actually enjoy having fun with, you can usually pretend pretty well to keep those people. At the same time, Astrid was not willing to throw herself wherever Diana wanted to so that she could feel better.

Did Diana think Astrid was at least a little taken in? Definitely. The girl seemed to be itching to jump in and comfort her, but Diana was sure to extend her act enough that she did not immediately get to do so. She could also sense that Astrid was just slightly uncomfortable with what was going on? Ha, she hadn't expected this when she'd first begun asking uncomfortable questions, had she? Diana was sure that things were at least slightly in the bag - now she just had to lie so perfectly that the bag could be neatly packed, sealed and sent off. She allowed herself a moment of self-satisfaction (traces of which she managed to keep off her face), while she put the lip gloss back into her red handbag, and then turned back to the girl, wondering how she should go about this next.
"Is something wrong?"
The hand on her shoulder convinced her that Astrid was truly buying her story - though perhaps she was just pretending to. Diana knew that if she was devious, Astrid was much more devious than her. Now if this was her clueless brother she might have believed the comforting and the 'you-can-tell-me-anything' a lot more readily. But well, she was pretty sure that at least whatever she shared was not likely to end up on the first page of the daily prophet's student edition - Astrid, even if she did find out that Diana had lied (and as long as Diana was careful enough, how would she know?) did not seem like the type to tell everyone. No, she'd probably take revenge, but Diana thought that she could deal with that. After all, she herself was definitely not above using rumors for nefarious purposes.
"I-I don't think you'd understand," she said in a rushed tone, as if she was trying very hard to trust Astrid and failing. Well, she certainly did not trust Astrid one bit, but showing it was a little more complex, especially because she had to be subtle and push down her dramatic urges. She did throw in a little drama because she couldn't resist it, she ran her fingers down her somewhat wet hair, and said, "Its the kind of thing that-" and stopped, then bit her lip, as if she had almost revealed her secret and was trying very hard not to. She also tried to blush a bit, as if it was something that she wanted very much to hide, and was ashamed of, though blushing was too involuntary for her to claim much credit for succeeding in convincing Astrid at that count. Though there was still quite a bit of time.
"Maybe we should start walking, so that you can spill."
She had noticed the peeping head from the corner of her eye, and also Astrid scaring him off (what an interesting turn of events!) and decided that Astrid was right. They needed a little more privacy for the next step. Diana had already decided that a few tears were in order, after a little more talking, and after she had (fakely) convinced herself that Astrid was worth trusting. Anyway, the last thing she wanted to do was this particular lie to come out in the open (how would she fake-confide in people then?) and cry in front of a crowd. She loved the attention, but there was a time and place for everything, and now was her time for getting the exclusive attention and sympathy of her so-called best friend. Did Astrid really care? Diana wasn't sure, but she was a putting up a pretty good show of pretending to, what with the linking of hands and all that.
She allowed Astrid to help her rise, fiddled a bit with her heel (with the hand not linked in Astrid's) and then started to walk along with her, with a quick, "That's probably a good idea." She walked a bit with Astrid, allowing the silence to lengthen, before she decided that it was an appropriate moment to put in the next word. It was getting somewhat dark, but that was alright. Easier to pretend without light anyway. "I know you don't always think that much of me and the gossiping," she said in a detached, far-away, very un-Diana voice. "But this secret would destroy my life if it came out." She resisted the tempetation to stress the word destroy, keeping her voice flat and monotonous and hopefully convincing. Sometimes, you could say as much by what you didn't do than by what you did.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • ) It seemed like Diana was trying to trust her, and although that was sweet of her. There was part of Astrid that was thinking, 'why the hell wouldn't she trust me?' After all she was about as good of a friend as it gets. She dealt with all of Diana's stupid stupid gossiping and still came back to her when it was all over (OK so that was mostly because she got bored being alone and it's not like Leif is any fun). But if she really tried, she could probably get a newer better friend who didn't bring her down in society with a new rumor every other week.
She thought about it a little and remembered only that girl, Cassandra. Sure Cassandra gave her lots of attention, it seemed she would to anything to fit in. But that was awful annoying too and definitely not fun. She didn't want friends who didn't have any personality, she wanted friends who were independent but -you know- friendly. She realized she had been ignoring Diana's quest at drama and turned her attention back to her just as she was beginning a sentence, but stopped midway. All the while, Diana was biting her lip and running her fingers through her hair. A bit dramatically.
Although Astrid was still listening, she was beginning to think less and less of the story. She would still listen and probably try and help Diana with whatever but she wasn't actually going to take any of that seriously, and if she had the chance she was definitely going to take the offense again. She didn't like being the one comforting the other, or trying to guess at the other.
After all, if Diana was making her guess it meant she was in control. And Astrid hated it when Diana was in control of their relationship. In fact, she hated it when Diana was in charge of anything. Her friend agreed to take a walk with her, and Astrid shot the peeping boys another nasty look; just for the fun of it. "I'll help you up."
Astrid let herself serve as a support as Diana got up and fiddled with her heel. The last thing she needed right now was Diana breaking her ankle. A trip to the hospital wing (even if it was a quick one) would be majorly annoying and only serve for the base of more drama. Diana agreed that a walk was a good idea, and a good deal of silence began to stretch in-between the two as they began to move forward.
After the silence had sat for quite a while, Diana began to talk oh so softly. It was the kind of talking that was meant to be taken seriously. Astrid listened but wasn't fooled so easily, although she still believed Diana may need a little help, she didn't believe Diana would ever tell her just like this. It began with Diana saying that she knew Astrid's stand point on the whole gossiping dilemma. And then she continued to say that whatever secret she was holding back could destroy her.
There was no dramatic voices during these lines, and the flatness of her best friend's voice was kind of disturbing because it almost convinced her that she wasn't actually acting. At the same time, the mention of a secret that would destroy Diana made the hair on her arms raise up. She wanted, no, needed to know. "Diana, why would you keep this from me? We're best friends, you know everything about me." Lie, lie, and lie, wow Astrid was getting good at this lying thing. She had acted surprised at the things her best friend was saying and now continued to care about Diana. "Please, don't make me worry about you like that."
Oh that was funny, worry about Diana? That had certainly never crossed her mind before. She appreciated Diana's ability to be a big girl and handle things by herself, which is why now with the touchy feely moments she was so uncomfortable. She didn't know how to handle dependence, or how to comfort people. Luckily she seemed to be keeping herself afloat so far.

Damn, but she was way too good at this. Astrid was definitely getting caught up in Diana's little spider-web of lies, and it was time to tighten the noose. Of course, Diana realized that Astrid could be devious too, perhaps every bit as devious as her, and that she shouldn't let herself get too overconfident - but she couldn't resist the cockiness that she was feeling. To see Astrid Elkjaer, the slytherin bad girl, taken in with a bit of her acting, well, it was just too good to be true. In fact, Diana wondered if she was a little better than even she thought she was, which was extremely arrogant and vain - but hey, this was Diana they were talking about. She was contemplating changing around her story though, which was a bit trickier. Had she over used the abuse story what with Liam and all? Maybe. But it was still one of her best ones.
The best lies, she'd found over the years, had a few grains of truth in them. So she drew things from her own experiences, and added some spices to make them more interesting. Just like she did not like her food bland - the extremely sweet and extremely sour candy were testaments to that - she did not like her life to sound bland. And while she'd had an interesting enough life as it was, those were not things that she would ever reveal to anyone. So she had to make up lies, lies that would make her look better and bigger and greater than she actually was, a sufferer or a torturer, someone different, someone special. That was all she'd ever actually wanted, to seem special, and important and interesting. That was why she lied all the time, because as she was, no one would ever look at her twice. And she wanted those looks, so badly.
"Diana, why would you keep this from me? We're best friends, you know everything about me."
Well, at this point, she was enjoying Astrid's look of concern. Oh, but she was sure that Astrid NEVER actually worried about her. It seemed almost impossible that she would actually be kept up at nights wondering about Diana - they both knew that she could take care of herself. But even the fake concern was touching and enjoyable, to a certain extent, so she let Astrid speak. She waited a moment before raising her blue eyes to Astrid's, and asking, in a soft, somewhat less detached voice. Ah, but this was a huge contrast from Diana's loud and usual obnoxiousness. "I don't think I really know everything about you, Astrid. I guess it doesn't matter though. We all have our own secrets. I'm sure you'll tell me, when you think..." She paused. No one in their right mind would actually tell Diana a secret, especially when they knew her as well as Astrid did - which was to say, not too much. But it didn't hurt her innocent act one bit to have continued on this path.
She shrugged, walked a few more steps, slightly fast so she was ahead of Astrid, and then turned back to her. She was wondering whether to go more slowly or come right out with her secret. She figured going slowly was the right thing to do. It would never do to kill so much subtlety with a quick expose. "Do you like going back home, Astrid?" she asked, in a forced-casual voice. "Do you look forward to it?" The confusing question was meant to lead up to something, but Astrid couldn't know that, she might imagine that Diana was trying to change the topic to not tell her the secret, whatever it was. And she liked that. She loved the feeling of making Astrid wait and long and pine for her secret before she actually revealed it - she was sure it would make it easier for her to accept it.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • ) How had Astrid gotten here? With her best friend linked to her arm, worry in her heart, and not a bit of teasing in sight. It was strange, and didn't happen often. It was pretty well known that moments like this didn't go well with Astrid. She wasn't the kind of person that didn't care enough to listen to other people's problems and she probably wouldn't be listening to Diana's now if it hadn't hit her at such an inconvenient and surprising time. After all if Astrid had had it her way, they would be having much more fun than they were right now.
Well, Astrid sure wasn't having fun and she hadn't figured out that Diana sure was. Of course, if she did find out she would only be as annoyed as is physically possible. And the act she was teaching herself how to put on as she went would probably be burned off in a single eyebrow raising moment of disbelief. Maybe it was a good thing that Astrid was not figuring this all out. Untrusting feelings were all she needed to keep herself alerted, annoyance would probably ruin her entire position. And if Diana was as good an actress as she was expected to be, she would be able to use this to her advantage. Astrid had never seen Diana act up close before and although she believed she was pretty amazing at it, could anyone be this amazing at it? After all, Astrid was as worried now about Diana as she would ever be.
Diana did not believe her when she acted concerned, which was all fair game. Obviously, Diana knew her well enough to know that any extra time during the night was filled with much different and more interesting activities. Or maybe her lies were much easier to see through then she previously believed. How was she suppose to keep up her own act much longer when Diana had already seen through it once? She decided quickly that it did not matter how, just that she succeeded in doing so. Although she did not have any strategies lined up except for" just go with the flow and don't believe anything Diana says". Which up until now had worked pretty well.
Diana now wiped back, beginning to say how she didn't really know anything about Astrid. Which was true, she knew very little about Astrid's home life and less about the history that had shaped Astrid to become what she was today. Luckily Diana stopped halfway though her speech as if she had realized that it was not going to succeed and decided she needed to stop herself now before she condemned herself to failure.
What Diana did next was uncalled for, and to be honest it threw Astrid completely off guard. Diana had scurried in front of her and turned around, stopping Astrid in her path. With the soft talking and calm conversation that had been going on, Astrid wasn't ready for the kind of loud and obnoxious Diana to come back. But that is where this had seemed to be going. Diana threw two questions in Astrid's face, they hit quickly and Astrid had no real time to digest what this meant. Was she suppose to answer yes or no?
No would lead to, well why haven't you told me about it? Why are you keeping secrets Astrid? I thought you cared for me? And with me about to spill my heart, it's only fair you spill yours! But yes, that could lead to problems as well. Imagine, Then you just won't understand my complicated problems, I wish I had your life. Or possibly, I know you're lying! No one has a perfect home life so spill it!
All roads lead to defeat, so Astrid chose the one she thought she could handle. She lied, ""Yes, I love my home. I mean Leif is actually pretty laid back when he's here and there's plenty of wealth to lie in. She had acted taken aback, probably because she was. And rambled about any good things she could find about her home until she just had to turn back to Diana. Her dark eyes stared into Diana's blue and she wondered what exactly was going to happen next.

She could tell that Astrid was thrown off by the sudden change into the loud, obnoxious Diana. That had been completely intentional. Going on ahead, of course, was a little more tricky. She had to make the transition back into soft and sad Diana, but do it so gracefully that Astrid couldn't see through it, or get disillusioned. When you thought about it the right way, what Diana did was almost an art, the greatest form of acting, especially considering how high the stakes for failure were. One misstep, and her perfect lie was going to come down in shambles. She ignored that. She was so good at this that she was not going to make a misstep, and she continued to dance on.
Of course, Astrid had given her the most wonderful opening. She didn't really care much about what she'd said. The money part was just regular Astrid boasting, and the Leif part interested her (though she didn't believe he could ever be fun) but it wasn't really her focus at the moment. All she had wanted to here was a 'yes' and she'd gotten that. And of course she would. Astrid had the perfect life anyway - even if her mother sent her with clothes she thought were childish, even if her brother was a bit of a protective freak, and even if she'd end up married off somewhere with nothing to call her own in the world. It was still a life of no effort and all the luxury you might need. Of course she loved going home.
When she was sure a sufficient time had passed in silence to wear off the effect of the loud Diana, she continued. She did not switch straight to her softest voice, it was much more angry and bitter and upset than before. "Well, I hate going back home, Astrid." Her voice sounded like she was going to sob, but she kept the tears at bay for now. It was too soon. Instead, she lowered her voice to whisper, and repeated, "I hate going home," once again sounding like she was talking to herself rather than to Astrid at all. She sounded haunted, and that was exactly what she'd been intending to sound. The crazy mix of emotions was hard to reproduce (as hard as they were to feel) and they were getting exhausting.
She wasn't going to give an explanation just yet. Not only was she starting to feel drained and needed some time to recoup, but she also didn't see why everything should be given to Astrid on a platter. She was going to make Astrid wait for it, that was for sure. If she gave up the secret too easily it was sure to look fake, and she wasn't even sure Astrid believed her completely yet. Besides, she was totally sure that her secret was good enough to not look anti-climatic when she was done with the whole drama. She'd tell her, soon, but she would still make her beg for it.
She stopped and thought about the secret she was going to tell. Well, it had a few grains of truth. Not totally, but she had no doubt if she'd stayed with her parents for much longer...and of course, she did really hate going home, but it was only because it was boring and she was all alone except for her old housekeeper and her lawyer who came to visit once or twice. Of course, she had to keep up the happy-family facade or she'd just stay at Hogwarts. She got away from home as much as she could. Shopping, partying anywhere she could. She didn't have any friends she could really visit. No guys. No friends of the family, of course not. She really did hate going home.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • ) Astrid was still thrown off as the conversation continued. A bit of worry had laid itself in the bottom of her stomach and quickly clogged up her throat. The calm and quiet Diana was back, and the transition had happened so easily that Astrid thought nothing of it. She was glad that it had been made. Everything was easier when she had time to think, and Diana had made this possible again. Astrid was reminded that Diana was still in control and although she disliked this, she continued to do nothing to change it. Maybe she was waiting for the opportune moment or maybe she just believed it was easier to go along with whatever Diana was doing now.
She wondered briefly if she had answered rightly, or if her answer had spiraled her into more trouble. She would not say that she had doomed herself, partly because she was not an overdramatic twit and also because she was Astrid Elkjaer. Astrid Elkjaer could get herself out of anything and if Diana thought that she was in any way better about Astrid, she was wrong. Astrid, herself knew that she was a better person in every way. And in some twisted was Astrid believed that she was actually a good person. Maybe not a nice person, but a good person.
The time was passing slowly, and by the time Diana spoke again, Astrid's attention had been effectively gained back. Diana's voice was filled with bitter resentment as she spoke about her home and how she hated going back. It seemed like she may burst out into tears any moment. Astrid didn't know what to say to this. She wanted to just keep herself quiet, but knew that Diana was expecting something. What was she expecting? What did she want now? Astrid wanted an explanation, but it seemed like it would not come easily. Diana was holding those two simple lines over her head and as they made her palms sweat and her mind think, she wondered how much control Diana really did have over her at the moment. She didn't believe it was enough to actually give away any of the information that Diana so wanted.
But it might have been, Diana seemed to hold all the cards and she was always playing the right ones at the right time. Astrid was still stumbling through her mind, looking for an answer. How was she suppose to respond to that little comment. Was she suppose to change her own answer now? That could be a good strategy, but Astrid decided against it. It was too conflicting, and it seemed to be too willing. She didn't want to fall into Diana, whether it was a trap or not. But she wasn't the type to be spontaneous, or to think outside of the box. She didn't know how to create these elaborate schemes like Diana did, and the fact that Diana did know all about them was driving her insane.
Finally she managed to stutter out, "I'm sorry, do you want to talk about it?" She hadn't really put any emotions into her words but was impressed by the question purely because she came up with something quick enough. She had thought that she was going to just leave the silence running before. The fact that she had managed to fill it with something, no matter how silly or stupid her comment was, let a big lungful of air off of her chest.
She continued, "I mean, I probably won't understand. Being raised in the home I was, but that doesn't mean I won't at least listen." She rambled for a little, looked into her friend's eyes and then down. She felt powerless against this conversation. It seemed as if Diana was guiding her, skillfully and swiftly off the tracks. Astrid shut her mouth, thinking that her last two comments had been too cliche and now Diana was seeing through her easily discoverable mask.
